Dorico Hanging on Audio Engine

Hey there - I’ve been trying to open Dorico 4 and work on some projects from my Windows 10 Pro AMD desktop for days, but every time I try to open it, it lags on the audio engine. I’ve looked in the forums before, and last time I had an issue like this, I was very uncomfortable with the solution but it seemed to work.

The only thing that allowed me to fix the problem was rolling back my GPU by downloading an older version online (even though Dorico 3.5 and earlier versions of Dorico 4 worked fine on this computer at this version) since there seemed to be a compatibility issue with Ryzen RX 560 GPU driver, according to an older post that I’m having difficulty finding now.

That caused a lot of programs, including DaVinci that I needed for video editing to stop working. Also, this issue occurred after the latest Windows Update. It’s possible that the driver updated and I’m not sure, and I’m also not comfortable having to constantly check specs like that and change them just for Dorico - surely there has to be something else going on and a cleaner solution.

Happy to share any documents, logs, and specs.

Welcome to the forum, @nmaysaud. The first thing to do is to choose Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the resulting zip file here so we can take a look.

Hi @nmaysaud , are you referring to this thread?
Then please try the workaround with creating the mentioned text file as suggested by Wallander.

Hey, I think it was a different similar one but this might still help, thank you! I’ll test it out and see.

Hi Daniel! Thanks for the help - a couple restarts and it managed to stop hanging and opened. Here’s the diagnostic report I was able to pull.

Hi @nmaysaud , thanks for the data.d
According to the logs your problem is different to that what is described in my previously posted link.
It appears as following: You had Dorico running for 6 days and wanted to shut it down, but the audio engine refused somehow (for reasons I don’t know) and so you force quit Dorico but not the audio engine. When then restarting Dorico it tries to connect to the still running audio engine but fails an hangs indefinitely. After a reboot the zombied audio engine process gets killed off and you could start Dorico again. Is that what I described that what happened to you?
From the log data this is pretty much the most likely scenario, though I can’t tell with 100% certainty.
NotePerformer is not the problem with you. It gets recognized and does load with you.

Hi Ulf,

Awesome, thank you! I think that is definitely most likely - I had Dorico running for a while, wanted to close it, it wasn’t responding so I force quit it. Every time that’s happened, it’s likely the audio engine didn’t close with it. Any suggestions for getting everything to shut down properly when I force-quit Dorico in the future?

You can manually end any instance of the process VSTAudioEngine in Task Manager.

Yes @Janus, that’s right, but it does not explain why the audio engine is not shutting down as it should.
@nmaysaud, I want to find out more, so the next time it happens to you that Dorico does not shut down properly, please follow the advice from this posting from me. It is even best if you create two dump files in a row from each, Dorico and the audio engine. Thank you very much

Hey @Ulf thanks so much for your patience. I made the dump files for Dorico4 and VST Audio Engine. Hope you’ll be able to find out what’s going on! The VST minidump file alone is over the 4MB limit for upload here, so I’ll need to email that to you if you end up needing it.
