Dorico jumps away from where I am working

Dorico is starting to drive me a little crazy as I am doing work that requires me to switch frequently between Write and Engrave mode (and Setup mode as well). When I am working in Write mode for instance, even if I select something in the score where I am working and the Playback cursor is in the vicinity as well, Dorico will jump to another flow far away from where I am working. Same thing happens going from Engrave mode to Write mode. It could jump clear to the first flow. Other times it jumps a couple of flows away. It always seems to jump to an earlier flow in the project, not a later one. Yes I can type J followed by F and the flow number (if I remember it) to get back to the correct flow, but I then still have to scroll to where I was working. Fixing this issue so that Dorico stays focused where I am working would improve efficiency and prevent concentration breaks as I try to get back to where I need to be.

Another, similar issue, happens in Playback mode. Say I am working with a Percussion kit/player which is way down in the list of instruments. Every time I make a change it jumps back up to the top of the instrument list and I have to scroll back down to where I was working.

This is a known issue. (Not sure if it was already been addressed in recent updates).

It would be helpful for us to help, and for the Team to see if this is an unknown behaviour, if you could upload an example Dorico file, where this issue its reproducible (=“if I do xy, then wj happens”)

Since it’s a project wide thing (2 1/4 hours of music) I’m not sure it’s practical to send a file. It’s not like I can send you a flow since it has jumping as many as 15 flows back in the project. I also do not want to put my musical in a place where AI can find it.

In addition, It is not particularly predictable. Sometimes it stays in the flow where I am working. Maybe it’s related to how long I have had Dorico open. It seems to be worse now getting close to noon than it was last night. I did leave Dorico open all night. I’ve just closed Dorico and will reopen it and continue work to see if the behavior changes. I will get back to you.

If there is a way to send you my whole project without exposing it to the open internet where AI is busy scarfing everything up, let me know. I have done that before over a far worse issue.

Something I neglected to mention. I am also switching between layouts. Typically I am working with a full score layouts that are set up for each single flow (largely to stop the jumping problem) and a layout for a piano/vocal score. The piano vocal score layout spans the whole project, so that opens it up to those large jumps.

You could, on a duplicate of your project, reduce the number of flows deleting some of them and then on the remaining music, after doing Select All, apply some of the editing functionalities that you can find under menu Write>Transform, to make the music unrecognisable.

Is there a universal way to do the transform, or is it flow by flow?

Also, I expect I would have to delete all lyrics.

And how can I test if the problem is still there after I do all of this? It will be hard to do the ordinary work I am trying to get done on nonsense music.

I’m surprised that the jumping isn’t a common occurrence for all Dorico users with projects with a lot of flows (32 in my case). I’ve had the problem nearly from the time I started using Dorico. It’s the reason I created separate layouts for each flow. If the layout only has one flow in it, there is no jumping.

Note that I imported all but one of the flows from Finale generated mxl files.

I’d guess this might be at the root of your problem

I have a similar problem, but it is not restricted to switching between modes or going back and forth between flows. And it is absolutely non-reproducible, so posting anything goes nowhere.

I can be working on a vocal solo with piano accompaniment, for one example. Haven’t started putting lyrics in yet. Just notes and dynamics. Suddenly without warning I’m thirty measures away from where I was working. No sign of my caret, which is still back where I was. This can happen once, and then never again. Or I can be going along fine and it suddenly happens, where moments before in the same spot all was well.

Very disconcerting and frustrating.

Well. After closing Dorico before lunch then reopening and starting work again on the piano vocal score for the next flow, when I switched from my flow specific layout to the piano vocal score layout, I got a huge jump back to the very start of the project.

I really don’t understand what is so unique about my project that would make this happen with it and not to others with a good number of flows.

Is the problem the layouts that include all flows? For a conductor’s score, a piano vocal score, and parts, I thought that would be the usual thing. I would never have created flow specific layouts if I hadn’t had to deal with the jumping problem.
