I am trying to insert a half note Bb, an eighth note B natural and a dotted quarter note C in 4/4 time. Every time I insert the eighth note, it changes the half note to a dotted quarter note. Why is this happening and how do I fix it?

Normally, you should just enter one note after another, but it sounds like you’re entering the eighth note here:
… which is 3 eighths into the grid, not 4 eighths.
Perhaps you’re pressing left arrow after the halfnote? Make sure that the caret is in the correct beat position before entering the note.
