Dorico made my note placement off center

How does one center a not that Dorico places off center. For example in the picture provided below, you’ll see that I entered a dotted half note on a down stem level after hitting V. Then I hit V again for a second down stem level for the whole note which was placed as if it is starting on an eighth note before beat two of the measure. What is the best solution for correcting this Dorico error?

Go to Engrave mode > select the note > open the lower zone (Properties) > activate Voice Column Index.

You might even consider moving the semibreve/whole note to the left of the stem. Otherwise the dot would seem to belong to the semibreve.

This is another case where I would want the dot on the half note in the space above, and then the whole note could safely tuck under it without touching either the stem or the dot. Note what happens when you un-dot the half note.

You can also select both the semibreve and the dotted minim and click on the Swap Voice Order (under Voices on a right-click, or Edit > Notation > Voices).

This will put the semibreve on the beat, and move the dotted note forward.

It doesn’t seem to be a problem in Finale. All you gotta do is slide the note over with the note mover tool. Hopefully Dorico will give people about as much freedom as Finale does on the future instead of dictating note placement.

There is that much freedom, but the tools are different. The specific placement of one voice relative to another is controlled by the note spacing tool in engrave mode. Multiple voices with dotted notes are a particular issue.

But definitely check out the available engraving options before tweaking things by hand!
