I have been trying to figure this out for some time and cannot find the culprit, so here is diagnostics report for reference. Also, I do not know if this is related with the VST playback template acting funny as well when I switch to another score, buy it does not load that playback template correctly, even though it is selected as a default.

Which template? A built-in one for HALion libraries, or a third-party one?
I presume you’ve restarted the computer?
I’m using HAlion sonic selection for my orchestral score for now, instead of EWQL Gold which only works with my dorico 3.5 version (I never got Opus engine to work with EWQL in dorico 5 version). I force quit the program the moment I see an umbrella (yes, that ubiquitous apple doom symbol), and proceed a minute later after I restart.
Give it a minute! The Spinning Beachball does not represent doom – only that the app is not taking input while it’s busy thinking. It’s possible that it will never come back, but it’s more likely that it will recover.

how well can you reproduce the “not responding” issue?
in the diagnostics no crash files are contained, but it seems that the audio engine is playing stupid in that case.
If you can reproduce it, it would make sense to have a remote screen sharing session with me, where I could analyse further the behaviour. How is your feeling about this?

Got the spindump file for you (from the dorico “not responding”), but am having problems saving it into pdf. Now, it seems Textedit is crashing on me while I try to open the file.
