Tying to get my feet wet with Percussion Maps but am still baffled about how get the VST’s to sound properly in Playback. In Dorico I setup a Player to play Woodblocks - this gives a 5 line percussion staff. I mapped 5 different woodblocks from the VST to a Percussion map. What happens is Woodblock 1 sounds on each of the 5 lines. What I’m not understanding is what is needed to attached each woodblock to each line. (I suspect it’s Playback Techniques.) Nothing fancy here – no different articulations or noteheads are setup. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance!
I think for “Instrument” for each you want to use “Wood Block (Low)”, “Wood Block (Medium-Low”), etc.
“Wood Blocks” is a kit consisting of multiple instruments (the various sizes of wood blocks) and those individual instruments are what you should be mapping the sounds to.
Thanks for trying to help Michael. I was trying to get the five line percussion stuff working, You suggestion of separate Instrument names creates separate single line percussion staffs which is what I’ve been using all along and without percussion maps… So I guess I’ll forget the 5 line percussion staff for now and try again next year. Thanks again!
You can still use the 5-line staff or percussion grid with what I suggested. I’m not talking about changing the instruments in the score. Just the percussion map itself.
The 5-line-staff for percussion is perfectly accessible: you only need to create a kit in which your different wood block instruments would sit. Use the kit editor to choose which line or interval represents which instrument, and set the upstem/downstem voices
Follow mducharme’s advice and you should find how this works!
The kit already exists called “Wood Blocks” which consists of those. He is already using that correctly, but has incorrectly mapped the sounds to the kit itself instead of the instruments inside it so it doesn’t know which sound to use for which wood block.
You can of course make a different kit though if you want a different set up of wood blocks.
You’re right. I tried it (it showed as a grid but Layout options>Players>Percussion can change that) and the sounds were perfectly different. NotePerformer is set ok for that kit
What with all this help, I couldn’t let it drop!
This works! All 5 sound. Am using OT’s Orchestral Percussion, Woodblocks, Temple Block 4 and this is exactly what I wanted. Somehow my Wood Blocks got renumbered. They will ask me what happened to Wood Block 1…!
Very happy to overcome this hurdle in my understanding. Thanks, everyone!
Just putting a reminder here (as well as elsewhere) that John Barron is doing an in-depth session on Percussion and Drum Scores today.
Don’t know if this maybe of help, but I posted in July a zip file with the needed stuff for a VSL Sized percussion Woodblock set.
You’re welcome to use, explore, etc.
Thanks for this!
