Anyone know why Dorico Pro 6 doesn’t lock on my sample rate .
Dorico periodically will arbitrarily switch sample rates and my projects won’t load .
I have to reestablish the rates in preferences on my system and in Dorico both .
Shut down / restart it’s rather a tedious process .
Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Normally Dorico does not modify the sample rate by itself.
Do you also run other audio applications like e.g. DAW apps or mastering apps?
Also, you shouldn’t need to restart Dorico after changing sample rate. If you go to Edit > Device Setup and change there the sample rate, you just close that window and the new sample rate shall take effect immediately. Can’t your confirm this behaviour?
No I’m not running any other apps except ILOK .
I get the little red triangle pop up in gallery window alerting me to the sample rate error/change.
If I go to change it in device setup Dorico crashes , if I go to exit Dorico it crashes hence the restart .
I then go in Dorico preferences before I actually open the project and Dorico has changed the sample rate on me on its own . I can then change it to coincide with my Macs sample rate settings , which have also changed .
That sounds a bit like a permissions issue where it’s not really saving your desired choice because Dorico can’t write that to disk in whatever startup file Dorico uses. I know that Mac permissions issues were essentially made a moot point a few OSes ago but maybe a First Aid check run through Disk Utility might help… I’ve used Macs for the last 25 years, including a relatively new MBP and MacStudio with Apple Silicon and whenever I’ve had an issue that sounded like this, it turned out to be a permissions issue that could be corrected but I never did identify the sources of said changes…

That’s a really good idea but I’ve done the disc first aid thing and it didn’t help .
I was wondering if it has to do with where the Dorico files are stored on the HD and in which folders , maybe ?

this is all pretty confusing. What is the audio driver that you are usually using or wanting to use with Dorico, and at which sample rate? And at what sample rate does Dorico want to run the program?
Also, please have a look at the file
~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6/prefrences.xml
In that file you will see in line 12 to 15 something similar to:

What if you change the sample rate value to the one that your hardware wants it? (Make sure that Dorico is not running when you do the changes)
So Macs use core audio driver there is no other audio driver when I run Dorico pro 6 as the interface Black Lion Revolution 14 x 16 doesn’t use a separate driver either . A Mac uses a built-in sound system called Core Audio instead of separate third-party drivers. It manages all sound input, output, and hardware automatically. Revolution interfaces are class-compliant on Mac and do not require a driver.
The hardware doesn’t want to “see” any particular sample rate it goes along with whatever I set it at either 44.1 or 48 .
However periodically for some reason when I’m launching Dorico it will change the sample rate that I’ve chosen to a different sample rate and if I try to change it to the proper (matching) sample rate as to the one my Mac is set to (even though it was already set to that same rate before) it crashes . It doesn’t matter if it’s at 44.1 or 48 .

This is a bit confusing. I have never had Dorico Pro fail to keep a setting in Preferences which is what is essentially happening. Since your Dorico installation obviously wants to use a certain sample rate, how about changing your sample rate on the Mac to match Dorico then close and restart Dorico. You will get a lower pitch with 44.1K vs 48K. But the pitches should match. You will also need to make sure that your instrument libraries are set for the same sample rate. I wonder if your default library (ie Halion Sonic…) is set at the different rate and that is causing Dorico to change it???
I’m a little suspicious because Black Lion is quite proud of its own clocking, that it may have a persistent setting that is taking over in some cases? I dunno, just what I would check. I know in my own case that certain adjustments made in the Focusrite control center are still governing even when I’m not using that App. The interface still remembers.. Anyway I don’t know as I said for this one. I’d sure pay attention to the external sync light that it has on the front. In my own setup, I have to stay aware of the clock rate and which one is the master on s/pdif if you have something like that plugged into it, clock sync etc.
I have to match the Mac and the Dorico sample rate (that’s a given).
If I do that (and I have to check that before I open a project in Dorico ).
However Dorico will from time to time change the sample rate arbitrarily and if I don’t look in preferences before I open the project Dorico will crash if I try to change the sample rate when the project is open . Btw nothing plugged in the Black Lion clock is internal .

Black Lion doesn’t specify a single mandatory sample rate that they want you to use
for its Revolution 14 X 16 interface. Instead, the USB-C interface supports a flexible range of standard digital sample rates up to a maximum of 24-bit/192 kHz.

So… I finally figured it out .
Sibelius was changing my sample rate as its default rate is 44.1 as I do use it from time to time with some older material making xmls to cut and paste stuff.
Every time I did this Sibelius changed my Macs sample rate to 44.1 and if I went to open Dorico Pro 6 the project wouldn’t load (I’d get the red triangle pop up )
If I then quit Dorico or tried to change the sample rate in setup Dorico would lock up either way .
Anywho I feel very dumb and I’m sorry that I’ve wasted all of your time here , but I really appreciate how you were all so helpful to me , it means a lot !

But then there is still something fishy in your setup. I’ve just tried on both, my Mac and Win PC such scenario where I open Dorico and set the sample rate to 44.1kHz, then close it and change via system control panel the sample rate to 48kHz. Then I start Dorico again and it happily works. I go to Edit > Device Setup and sample rate is still at 48kHz and no alert triangle. This is the expected behaviour these days, that Dorico does not change the sample rate but leaves it at the current rate. As I say, for me that works on both, Win and Mac. I don’t understand why it is crashing with you.
Could you please do in Dorico Help > Create Diagnostic Report and send me the corresponding zip file. Maybe some crash files are contained which would be helpful to look at. Thanks

Dorico only crashes when the sample rate changes on my Mac (this is confirmed in Macs audio/midi window ) in a previously launched Dorico project the sample rate is 48k . When I would close that project and go into Sibelius it would change the sample rate to 44.1K
on my Mac (I didn’t realize at the time that was the default sample rate for Sibelius ).
If I tried to launch Dorico again after my Macs sample rate was changed by the program Sibelius and if I didn’t change the settings back to 48K both on my Mac and in Dorico BEFORE I opened my Dorico project Dorico would lockup and freeze and not let me change the sample rate . Because I am aware of that now I’ve changed the sample rate in Sibelius to match the one I use in Dorico and my Mac doesn’t change sample rates and Dorico doesn’t crash anymore .
