When I double-click on a Dorico file’s icon in the Finder File-System, the Dorico app opens as Dorico SE, not Dorico Pro.
I have never owned, nor installed Dorico SE.
If I launch Dorico first from its own icon/Spotlight without specifying a file, it launches as Pro AOK.
I’ve double checked with the ⌘I Info window that .dorico files are set to open by default with Dorico 5.app which is what I would expect.
I’ve double checked with Steinberg Activation Manager that it is happy.
Obvious workaround is to always open the Dorico app before opening a file, but it shouldn’t work that way, doesn’t make sense, and especially if I have similarly named files in different folders it’s annoying…
Not the end of the world, but an issue to be addressed…
Are you holding down a modifier key when you click on it? Dorico is Dorico, and the version that opens is dependent on which license you have. That said, holding down ctrl and alt will open the lesser versions. This is a feature, not a bug, so those with the full license who are collaborating with people who don’t have it can see what they see.
Can you say a bit about the specifications of your Mac, @b0berto?
Is it possible that you are holding down the Alt or Command keys when you double-click the project in the Finder to open Dorico? If so, then you are triggering Dorico Pro to launch as Dorico SE, which is something that we enable so that Dorico Pro users who need to check against the capabilities of one of the cut-down versions (e.g. teachers whose students are running Elements or SE) can easily do so.
No. That would be a very odd thing to do, especially repeatedly (though I guess you have a situation for it). My issue applies to every Dorico file on my system, all of which I have created in Pro.
It took me a while to figure out why the app was sometimes launching in Pro and other times not which is why I hadn’t filed the bug report.
In finder, the only thing that dictates whatever app is launched with a file is the “Open with: _____ / Use this application to open all documents like this one.” which is why I said I checked that setting. I’d somehow understand if the default-open dropdown had SE as an option (or Pro) but the only option, and the one that is set, is Dorico 5.app
Other than being a version behind current Apple OS, I can’t really say that there is anything special about my MacBook. The processor is an M1 Pro, but I can’t see how that would affect the file registry.
As James has pointed out, there is only a single Dorico 5 application, and it launches as Pro, Elements, or SE based on the type of license it detects.
Can you check that you have the latest version of Steinberg Activation Manager installed? Running Steinberg Download Assistant will be sufficient to install an update to SAM if one is available.
Thanks, it certainly appears that SAM is up-to-date. My colleague Richard might be interested in taking a look at some logs from your computer. Please do Help > Create Diagnostic Report from Dorico and attach the resulting zip file here.
The licence requested from the licensing system is Dorico Pro, so I don’t think it’s that that’s the issue. However, it does look from your Dorico logs like the application thinks you were holding down a modifier key while launching it, e.g.:
2024-12-15 17:42:22.374 [info] Running as Dorico SE: (Ctrl pressed)
