Dorico SE and Dorico Elements MusicXML export limitations

Hi all,

According to this chart https://www.steinberg.net/dorico/compare-editions/, Dorico SE should support import and export of musicxml files. However, when I open file that was received from a colleague using a full version of Dorico 6, (and opens in read-only mode in SE), and select file > export > musicxml, I get no “Export Musicxml” dialog. If I create a new project that is not too large for SE, the dialog appears, so I am assuming that my inability to export the large.

  1. Can anyone confirm this?

  2. The project is largish (SATB, 3 soloists and a small orchestra), I have not been able to find specifics on whether Dorico Elements could open and export the musicxml. Does anyone have an inkling?

(I used Dorico for the 60 day trial last year, but was too cheap to buy it, since Musescore met my immediate needs. But Dorico is pretty dang amazing. Kudos to the developers. Also the forum was the nicest I’ve ever participated in.)

I think you are right.
If the project can only be opened read-only in SE either because it is too large, or it uses capabilities reserved to Pro, then you will not be able to modify and save it (in any format .dorico or .xml). But a project created within SE can be exported as .xml.

Dorico SE cannot export MusicXML files from read-only projects. Dorico Elements has no limit on the size of project you can use, so you would be able to export MusicXML from that version.
