Please note that the horns are sealed in 4 pieces for each stave. But in one of the systems (from bar 106), for some reason, the 3rd horn is transferred to a separate stave.
I absolutely don’t need it. Why is Dorico doing this? This takes up extra vertical space. I can’t even find any workarounds.
The same goes for trombones (in the same system). In previous systems, trombones were grouped into 4 for each stave (which is ideal in principle). But for some reason, something incomprehensible is happening in this particular system. Trombones 3 and 5 are transferred to a separate stave. No condensing settings help.
Also, please see this attached file.
There, in the layout options, you can see that the condensing is configured so that the trombones are grouped in 4 pieces on each stave (there are 8 trombones in total, therefore there should be 2 staves). But again, in the 2nd system (where these trombones enter), they are notated no on the 2 staves, but on the 4. This takes up extra vertical space.
In the other thread which you started about 2 weeks ago, which is basically the start of this thread as it asks about unwanted separation of staves in condensing, about 25 minutes before you started this thread I posted a possible answer for how to achieve one-stem notation in a condensed unison passage. Did you have a chance to try it? It might introduce other problems, such as duplicated unison noteheads, but it puts all 4 horn parts onto one condensed staff and has one stem for each unison note rather than two. It would probably also work for the trombone issue you described, but you would need to put trombones 3 and 4 in the down-stem voice on that staff, and trombones 7 and 8 in the down-stem voice on their staff.
then please examine the Condensing Change at bar 106 in each file to see what I did. You will probably need to do some experimenting to fine-tune the appearance.
Here are the two edited files.
To reduce the file size, I applied the Silence Playback template. 1 (ed).dorico (1.5 MB) 2 (ed).dorico (1.3 MB)
A direct quote (by you) from that thread:
“This option is not suitable, because in this case, the staves are automatically divided into those with suppressed playback and those without it.”
I don’t have playback suppression anywhere in this score.
That’s exactly why I abandoned this method and instead just muted some of the instruments in the mixer.
