Dorico stops condensing on page 2 (Flutes and Oboes). There is no difference between the two voices, and I have tried every condensing change and layout/engraving/notation option there is. I am still learning Dorico, and couldn’t find a solution for this online.
I’m afraid I can’t immediately reproduce this; neither the custom notehead nor the lift articulation should prohibit condensing, at least in the latest version, 5.1.81 . The only thing suggesting any shenanigans to me is the fact that the flutes’ sfz markings are highlighted while the Oboe 1 one isn’t, so maybe they are linked in a strange way. Could you share a cut-down version of your project file so we can take a look?
The dynamic markings don’t seem to be the issue. I can also note that my Dorico isn’t up to date, as I can’t access Steinberg Download Manager and therefore don’t have a download link. Maybe this is bugging out the software? Here is a link to the project it is just me noodling around trying to better learn Dorico.

The version of Dorico is not the issue, but you can bypass the Steinberg Download Assistant by going to this page: Dorico 5 Updates and Downloads | Steinberg to get version 5.1.81 .
A part of the problem* comes from the fact that you have some of your woodwinds as section players instead of single (a.k.a. solo) players. Note the icons left of the player names in Setup mode:
* in that when I change the Flutes to be single players, they condense as expected. But the clarinets are also section players, and I can paste the same note into their staves and have them condense without an issue as well. See here for more info about the difference.
That being said, something much weirder is afoot here too. Both Flute 1 and Oboe 1 have a solo entrance on the first page, with two different transpositions of the same line. In both cases, when I either delete that line or add something underneath it in Flute/Oboe 2, the condensing on page 2 works again. Deleting the clarinet notes in bar 12, then pasting the same (apparently cursed) line in Clarinet 1, their condensing breaks. Finally I tried deleting, then exactly recreating the line, note for note, and I found out it’s the slurs causing the issue. I have never encountered this before, and someone like @John_at_Steinberg might want to take a look.
Officially formatted, isolated bug report:
slur condensing bug demo.dorico (501.0 KB)
- Open the attached demo file.
- In Write mode/Galley view, add a slur on bar 1 of Flute I.
Result: In Page view, the first system of Flutes I/II gets uncondensed.
- Delete the Flute II note in bar 5.
Result: In Page view, the first system of Flutes I/II gets condensed again, but the second system gets uncondensed.
Note that the Flutes here are section players. Repeat steps 2–3 on the (single-player) Oboe staves to show expected behaviour.
I have now swapped out the section woodind players (error on my part) to solo players, and the problem has been fixed in my project! So thank you so much for looking at it and spotting that:) Still strange that a slur would change the condensing though
Good to hear, and happy to help! Just for completeness: while keeping a clear distinction between section and solo players is by all means good practice and it addressed the issue at hand, indeed it shouldn’t have caused this issue in the first place—hence the bug report.
