If your extra notes were in added staves, you must (re-add the staves and) erase the notes that were in the added staves, not just delete the staves.

The score is in 4 staves throughout. I simply erased a beat --from a 3/4 measure to a 2/4 measure (as in the images shown), before the downbeat of the following measure. The playback machine still wants to play the missing (silent) beat before it plays the notes of the next bar. So it throws off the timing. Is there any way to tell it not to do this?

How did you achieve this? It looks as though you added a 3/4 time signature after the bar and then used “Remove Rests” on the quarter‑rest.
If you select the eighth‑rest, is “End voice immediately” enabled in the Properties panel? If it is, disable it. Then select the quarter‑rest, press Shift+B, and type “‑1q”.

Like @LAE , I think you used the Remove Rest option, but that only removes the rest, not the beat. Put the caret immediately after the eighth rest and type SHIFT + B then -1q to change the number of beats in the measure from 3 to 2.
