Dorico + Tonalic : interesting combination?

Today I received the “Tonalic” instrument as a free gift from Celemony (since I’m a Melodyne customer). It is pretty easy to get it to “play along” with a Dorico score, in a limited way. It may prove useful. I’m just beginning to play with it.

  • Insert it in Dorico as a VST instrument. Don’t assign any tracks/players to it.
  • Press a button to start learning tempo / meter from Dorico. Start playback in Dorico briefly.
  • In Tonalic, drag desired chords into timeline boxes. Drag desired patterns into a timeline.
  • Tonalic will then play in sync with the Dorico score.

Notes/comments:

  • According to advertisements, Tonalic “intelligently” plays back recorded artist performances.
  • The free version comes with electric/acoustic guitar performances - pop/rock oriented. Supposedly paid versions can add bass, drums, more styles.
  • I haven’t found an internal level control. [I think there may be a workaround with an external plugin insert.]

Addition: The only way I found to control the Tonalic audio level was with a somewhat awkward workaround.

  • Create a fake player with for example “Sketch : Percussion” (probably anything would work)
  • On the Play page, assign the “Percussion” instrument to Tonalic (it will never have notes)

The instrument fader labeled “Percussion” controls the audio level as desired.

I think it is easy to eliminate the fake player from the printed score.

This instrument seems to provide functionality similar to Band-in-a-Box + RealTracks (which I have used for a long time). The user interface is slicker. The user is encouraged to purchase lots of additional content in both cases  .
