Dorico undoing condensing changes?

Hi All,

I’m having a strange problem with this project.

When I make a condensing change to one group, Dorico is automatically undoing the previous condensing change.

Example: at m. 62. If I change the clarinet 2/3 so that they are “a2” then change the saxophones so that the triplets and half note have separate stems, Dorico changes the clarinets back to what was there before. Would appreciate any help.

It seems to work fine for me, unless I’m misunderstanding.

Here’s what I did:

  1. Double click the existing condensing change to open the dialog
  2. Select the saxes in the left panel
  3. Tick the box next to the saxes
  4. Set manual condensing for saxes as desired
  5. (If you select the clarinets, you can see that their different condensing rule is still there)
  6. Click OK

I notice you are micro-managing lots of things using Manual Condensing overrides where you’d achieve the same result with a well-placed phrase break. That’s a condensing change where you activate the checkbox for an instrument but don’t change any other settings.

To expand a little on @hrnbouma’s suggestion, Dorico considers a “phrase” for the purposes of condensing to be music which occurs between two rests. Dorico evaluates its rules and picks a condensing approach for the entire phrase.

Adding a condensing change for an instrument mid-phrase, without actually specifying any behavior in the main part of the dialog, tells Dorico to restart its phrase evaluation at that point, using your default settings, as if there were a rest there.
