Dorico very slow in Setup mode

When making changes in setup mode (e.g. adding an instrument to a player) Dorico takes several seconds (more than 5 seconds in most cases) to complete the change. If this is normal behaviour, is there a way to make all the changes I want to make and only then have Dorico update my score so that I only have to wait once? If this isn’t normal behaviour, how do I fix it?

I’m working on an orchestral score with 20 players and 3 flows, two of which are currently empty and the last one only has around 120 bars of music. I’m on a mid-2014 15-inch MacBook Pro with quad core i7 and 16GB of RAM.

It doesn’t surprise me. Even with a less old Macbook pro (2019, 32GB Ram) these operations are slow.

In that case that is really really annoying! And there’s no way to make all the changes I want and only then update the score (so I only have to wait once)?

You could try opening only a single instrument layout (like flute) and adding all your additional instruments with only that layout open. that might speed things up a bit.

Alas that doesn’t seem to help much :frowning:

Another thing that is very slow is also switching between Concert and Transposing score…

Can you share your project with us? (upload here in the forum, or send via private message clicking on the user icon) I would be very glad to test it with mine old MBP 2011 (!) (also i7 and 16gb Ram).

To make Setup mode operations faster, it’s necessary not only to switch from the full score layout to one of the instrumental part layouts, but also to ensure that only a single tab is open, a single window on the project, and that you save, close and reopen the project after you view the instrumental part.

If you don’t close and reopen the project, then Dorico may well still be processing the full score layout in the background. And if you have multiple windows or tabs open on your project, then every one of your edits is also being performed in every view, and while it does these operations in parallel to the extent possible, it will definitely take longer the more views and windows you have open on the project.

We know that Setup mode operations are really too slow in large projects and we do have plans to make improvements in this area, but they are tricky and require significant development time to achieve, so please bear with us.

Thanks very much, this solution makes Setup mode usable for me! In future, it would obviously be great if it would be possible to achieve this without closing/reopening the project (which I imagine could be an easier update to make than improving the speed of Setup mode in general).
