I’m using Dorico 6.1 with a VEP server project that previously worked without issue. When I try to connect Dorico to the VEP project, no server instances are visible in the VST tab in play mode. I’ve cleared my audio cache, restarted my computer and restarted VEP and Dorico several times. Dorico still will not recognize any server instances for connection. My VEP is fully updated as well. Is there anything else I can try? This is the first time I’ve tried to use this project since upgrading to 6.1.
Firewall? OS updates?
Another I’ve had to do in the past for unknown reasons is type in the instance name which then connects.
I host VEP locally on my computer. I’m running Tahoe 26.0.1. I tried typing in the instance names and that still didn’t solve the issue.
It’s not Dorico that discovers server instances, rather, the VST itself does the network scan. This is a pretty common problem (at least it happens to me often). One way to get around it to use 127.0.0.1 as SERVER and the instance name in the INSTANCE box.
That worked! Thank you so much.
I thought that’s the settings VEP use as a matter of course? I can’t remember ever having had that problem but I know what to do now if it does ever occur!
No, unfortunately not. If the VST doesn’t pick up the network broadcast from the server (even on the same machine), the text boxes will default to empty.
This seems to occur most frequently when upgrading VEP. Sometimes toggling “Advertise on local network” setting in VEP (Server) kicks it back in gear.
But this problem is not nearly so annoying as dragging channels and having the entire server project freeze, which I’ve reported countless times to them… but I digress …
Vienna Ensemble Pro uses something called Bonjour (aka ZeroConf) made by Apple to discover instances. It is possible you uninstalled that or blocked that, without knowing what it was. Or, it could be some bug in an older version of Bonjour. VEP doesn’t seem to install the latest version from Apple.
On Windows you can update Bonjour to the latest version by downloading the iTunes for Windows installer (which has it bundled) and using something like 7-Zip to extract the iTunes installer and running the Bonjour installer inside there (because you probably don’t need iTunes itself). Frustratingly, Apple doesn’t seem to make a separate download available for it.
In System Settings>Privacy & Security>Local Network turn on Vienna Ensemble Pro Server and it will find the available instance names and server automatically. You won’t need to type these in if you do this.
