Is there a place where I can set this as a default? I would like for a note that is seven 8th notes long on beat one of a 4/4 bar to default to appearing as a dotted half tied to an eighth.
Essentially, I would love to have the program default to letting me notate this rhythm without needing to slog my way through the “force duration” tool.
This is definitely a perennially hot topic here. On the off chance that you’re a Stream Deck user, shortcuts can be made to speed up process (scrolling through the entire thread will you a sense of the standing discussion amount user, if that’s of any interest):
This doesn’t feel like so obscure a rhythm that a paying user should be reliant upon third-party hardware to have to input it quickly.
Thanks for the thread as well - hopefully Steinberg is getting ready to introduce this feature as it seems like a pretty crazy omission for 7-year-old software.
And there are more than a couple other discussions of this on the forum if you search!
I was not able to find a combination of note grouping settings to display that rhythm by default. But the force duration method is a matter of one extra keystroke (or click) during entry; hardly a slog.
On a similar note, I would like to be able to set this appearance as a default setting as well:
This and my above request seem like pretty standard appearances for these rhythms. I hope Steinberg includes them as a selectable default in an upcoming release.
Yes - and it’s also in the spirit of the Dorico approach to allow people to choose the notation options they want by default, as long as they are reasonable.
These particular options look pretty clear to me - even though the first one doesn’t expose the half-bar.
I would like to once again petition the fine folks at Steinberg to please create a setting that allows this rhythm to be notated without needing a complicated workaround.
While I agree there’s merit in the request, is it currently really such a hardship? Once you’ve pressed O for Force Duration, you then enter the notes as you would in any other music app:
7G.T5GG
The exact order may vary, depending on your options, but that’s the same number of presses as you would do in Finale, and I’m guessing Sibelius isn’t much different.
There’s a setting in Application Preferences to keep Force Duration on or off between Note Entry sessions, so you can leave it on permanently.
I believe that also breaks dotted quarters on the beat; I want dotted quarters available by default on the beat but to show the eighth note when off the beat.
I’ll be damned, you’re right. I was looking at bar two of your example there, but I think that only happens if the dotted quarter is followed by a rest. Thanks much, that solves one of my frustrations.
