Often the ‘dotted notes’ button does not work, or turns on or off automatically. Why is this and what can I do to prevent it?
Could you be a bit more specific about when it doesn’t work? What do you expect to happen, and what is happening?

By default, the period works to add a dot, but the Numeric Keypad decimal point does not.
Also, I believe you need to have the caret active before selecting the period (dot) for it to stick.
…or you can have the note selected (highlighted orange).
