Download Assistant fails

Just installed Steinberg Download Assistant. It fails to start up. Error message: “A connection with the download server could not be established “

My internet connection is fine. Is all of Steinberg’s software this buggy?

Not really. What OS are you running? Do you have a firewall or any other kind of security software running that could be blocking the connection?

Windows 10 pro.

I manually added a Firewall exception for this assistant. Still getting the error message.

Do you have any “antivirus” software running?

You could try re-downloading it from here: Get Your Steinberg Product | Steinberg to see if that helps.

What @XLColdJ said.
This had been a common error message in previous versions for many users. Steinberg fixed it a while ago. If you are still having trouble you can also download everything directly and circumvent Steinberg Download Assistant altogether.

Ah, the sweet aroma that is déjà vu!

Yes, I’m trolling!

LOL - what took you so long, @Googly_Shakespeare ? That was your all time favourite cue …

I am glad Steinberg was able to fix it. Almost never happened here, though.
Sweet taste of recent nostalgia.

Actually, it works better now, at least on my system. I’ve used it to download the demo of 15, and a few gigabytes of other updates. :crossed_fingers:
I like to think my constant whining got on their nerves so much that they fixed it just to shut me up.

Yes, that’s most probably the reason

It is indeed smooth sailing with SDA by now. Steinberg could have properly announced the fix and take credit for it. They do good stuff and “forget” to mention it. They should IMO.

@tony.vandongen
I used to have much the same issue as yourself. I would just go to the download site. Most of Steinberg’s stuff is there.

Erm… Not on my end, at least, when using my usual Windows account.

Without registrating the SDA in Windows Firewall, I get a message which could be considered as a french translation of the message that @tony.vandongen gets, when attempting to launch it as administrator :

After having registrated the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\Download Assistant\Steinberg Download Assistant.exe (I learned at this occasion that the SDA is still in 32 bits format : strange…), as previously, I am asked by Windows to enter my administrator password but nothing happens afterward and there is no hidden process occuring, according to Windows Task Manager.

So, at the end and as it has always been, I can use the SDA only with my Windows Administrator account. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

@cubic13
Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. I thought that was fixed for good since the flood of SDA related threads stopped at one point. I was under the impression that the remaining posts were due to old versions of SDA and/or individual firewall/security/write permissions not having been granted on a specific system.

They released a note just now about the SDA update and a security related issue. I assume you run the latest version, right?

Okay, so victory celebrations are uncalled for…:worried:

Just checked that with my administrator account : I guess that it’s the latest one…

Yeah, I thought so (that you already had the latest version).
If I’m not mistaken it has also something to do with regional providers and protocols. But I’m out of my depths here so I’d rather not drop any more technical terms I know nothing about…

Could be, yes. But I’m also thinking of more or less misbehaving access rights on some folders somewhere on my system. But the Windows access rights management is so convoluted that I keep myself as much as I can out of it.

As long as I have a reliable way to connect to the SDA, it’s not a big deal, even if I would like to avoid each time the Windows account change : it’s rather tedious.

Strangely enough, I have never encountered anything like it on both Windows rigs (10/11).
Anyhow, it’s rather inconvenient for you and it’s even worse for users who are new to that eco system. Hopefully, Steinberg will be able to fix the last remaining issues (which seem to affect only a limited number of users) soon. Fingers crossed :folded_hands:

I have also registered SDA with Windows Firewall.

When I run SDA as Administrator, I still get the same connectivity error.

What happens on your end, when attempting to launch the SDA with an administrator account ?

It still gives the same connectivity error when I run it as an administrator (and after I registered it with Firewall).

OK, but I was thinking of launching it from an actual Windows administrator account, not “as administrator” from a user one.
