So pushing the up or down arrow, it will only snap to a common number of steps: 4/8/16/32/64 (instead of what it currently does: up/down by one step).
To change it by one step at a time we still have the mouse wheel and the click & drag up and down. So you have three redundancies, three ways of doing the same thing (and all three are the hard way) but no common snap values.
The grid snap already does this. You only have to click up or down once to snap to the prev/next common grid snap (to go from 1/4 to 1/8 it’s just one click, not four clicks). You don’t have to sit there going by one number at a time. So why not for this step box?
Actually would be cool to have custom pattern presets. With the preset you could have all the step choices you want in there, like the grid snap presets.
Yeah this makes more sense to me. As someone who occasionally indulges in an odd time sig you wouldn’t want to loose those other values. I’m not at Cubase to verify, but I’d think you could accomplish something similar using Track Presets (without the convenience of a drop-down though).
Also currently you should be able to directly type a number a number in the field. So maybe the arrows are ok to go from 8 to 12, but 16 to 32 makes more sense to type it in.
Right, but why don’t we have common step values for the arrows, when we have four ways of doing the same exact thing = step up/down by one (mouse wheel, click & drag, type in, arrows). That’s no good. Have the different input methods do different shortcuts. Mouse wheel for step by one; arrows for common pattern lengths.
Not sure I agree. Different input methods are useful to different people with different needs. For example I have essential tremors (involuntary hand shaking - and they are not in any way shape or form essential). So scrolling is easier than repeatedly trying to click on the same tiny spot. I’m sure there are others where the opposite is true.
To clarify when I said you can type in the value, I didn’t mean that to change the value from 10 to 20 you needed to enter 11, 12, 13, 14, 15… 20 to get there. You can just type in 20 all in one go. The reason I mentioned it was because it was not the same as the other methods.
Ok, then the feature request would be to provide an option in the settings to toggle an “alternate pattern mode”.
Ok, how about a “double pattern” button. I think it’s already there somewhere but it’s missing the “halve pattern”. So just to be able to double/halve the pattern with one click is ideal. What about left/right arrows beside the up down arrows? Or Ctrl+click the up/down arrows to snap to the next common pattern size. Ctrl + Shift + click on up arrow = greatest common (64 steps). Down arrow = smallest common (4 steps). Or right clicks.
Or Shift + Alt + arrow keys (key commands) to increase/decrease to the next common pattern size. Same idea as grid snap, but for pattern sizes.
This request is for the drum machine specifically, which is designed as an easy type of step sequencer. Easy pattern sizes would fit right into the design doctrine.
