I’ve written a jazz waltz for a 9-piece ensemble that has a trombone Cadenza that ends on a specific pitch on beat three. I want to cue that quarter note in all the parts. So I’ve notated it with a half-note rest with a hold sign marked “trombone cadenza” then a quarter rest showing the trombone cue. But when I try to write a half-note rest followed by a quarter-note rest in the drumset part it will only show a full-measure rest sign, so I can’t write the cue for the drumset player. Any ideas?
Enter a half note, turn on force duration on the following rest, then delete the note. Finally, turn the second half rest into quarters by pressing 6. Ah, it was in 3/4, but the procedure is the same.
