Drum recording setup question using Cubase LE5

I have Cubase LE5 with a Tascam US-1800 and I’m trying to record my drums. The problem I’m having, well one of the problems is, I can only seem to get channel 1 and 2 to register and record. I think I’m setting up the VST connections correctly, but I’m not sure. I’ve made some records, but I found out it’s all been from the condenser mics I’ve had plugged into channels 1 and 2 and they are setup on boom stands above my kit.

I have 5 other mics around my drum kit, but nothing is being recorded. When I hit the the mic’d drums I can see the LED next to the channel light up, but nothing is being recorded from that mic.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mitch

If you have set up the “VST crap” correctly, you need to set the correct input bus for the different tracks.

How about posting screenshots of those “VST crap” windows, so we could verify this “crap” is indeed set up correctly?

Awesome! Thanks!

Now how do I do that? I need step by step instructions.

Can you upload screen shots showing your setup of tracks?

Left click on the input / output routing pop up menu - quite well explained in TFM. “Setting up busses” - “Using the busses”
And in most of the other “Can’ t record -” / “No sound -” posts posted on the forums…

WGmitch: I have a Tascam US-1641. To Record your Drums
do these 4 things.

  1. http://home.comcast.net/~halljack505/pwpimages/Device%20Setup.PNG
    Make sure yours says US-1800
    2.http://home.comcast.net/~halljack505/pwpimages/vst%20%20connections%20%202.PNG
Make sure your – input VST connections – are all mono

If you follow what I did and substitute US-1800 for my US-1641
it should get you there.

Jack

Okay, thanks. I have the first three screens correct or at least I know I can do that, but…

How do I get the last screen you posted? I’m sorry, but this is all very confusing to me. I’m am absolutely lost.
I don’t even understand the terminology.

Okay. What’s a TFM? Where do I find the Input/Output routing pop up menu?

Something you might want to "R"ead  .

If I’m understanding correctly, you don’t have the “Inspector” enabled?

Can you upload a screen shot of your setup of tracks so I know what I’m supposed to take a screen shot of?

I’m not trying to be a smart ass, I am a complete and utter novice at this. The first time I touched audio software was one week ago and that was this version of Cubase. I really didn’t think it would be this hard to figure out, but I was wrong.

Thanks!

LE5 Operation Manual (AKA “TFM” ) → Chapter 3 The Project Window → The Inspector

Do you have the Inspector enabled? If not, you won’t be able to see your tracks’ input/output routing in the Project Window.

Oh that TFM! I didn’t get an operations manual, now that would be handy! :stuck_out_tongue: All I got was a quick setup pamphlet.

The Inspector, hmmm, I don’t know.

You can download the full documentation from the main Steinberg site …

Happy reading!

Thanks I tried that link, but it doesn’t work.

Please try again. Link is definitely corect.

If still no success go to http://www.steinberg.net and navigate:
Support → Current Downloads → Downloads Software: Cubase LE 5

WGmitch: Watch this video over and over on getting started with Cubase
This guy talks about “THE INSPECTOR BUTTON and area”
at the 4:31 mark.

Also what kind of computer are you using
PC - Mac - Laptop
32 or 64 bit

IMO WGmitch do a bunch of Test Recordings first
so you get everything down

Jack

Thanks for all the help. I was able to download the operations manual a from home. I suspect the firewall at work was blocking the ftp site.

Also, I was able to setup and record using Jack’s screen shots, but I really didn’t have much time to play around tonight.

But let me see if I am on the right “track” here…

So I need to setup an Audio Track for each mic, correct?

I figured out (by watching a youtube video) how to import a song, so I imported a song and was trying to play along and record, but the song seemed to over power anything I was playing on the drums. I song was the 1st audio track as seen in my screen shot attached. How do I play along with a song and record to where you can actually hear my drums.
