Drum Track no sound

Hello,

I must create a drum track to an existing score and I’ve never done that before. So I added a drum stave to the score, but I don’t get a drum sound.

Furthermore, I want to use either Addictive Drums, Halion or Groove Agent. The only options I get when I’m in Play Mode are these:

What can I do to use my options and finally get a drum sound?

Kind regards

Peter

Hi @Piano_Vink, which kind of drum you need to add? You don’t add a “drum staff” in Dorico, you just add a Player that holds an Instrument, or a Percussion/Drum Kit that has several instruments in it. Then depending in the Playback Template that you use, Dorico assigns automatically the necessary sounds and the Expression and Percussion maps.

If you want different sounds/libraries than Note Performer you need to apply a Playback Template that points to those sounds/libraries: for example the Auto playback template (from menu Play>Playback Template, choose Auto then click on Apply and close)

This series of videos explains all what you need to know about Playback in Dorico: click here.

Hi Christian,

thanks for your answer, but:

I’ve watched 3 videos so far, but I didn’t succeed in creating a template that matches my needs.

My question is: in Cubase 15 I need just a few clicks to have an Instrument of my collection linked with the respective track. (Addictive drums, IK Multimedia. Korg and so on)

Is there a similar way in Dorico or do I have to define a template with end point configuration and all the stuff? I must admit that I didn’t understand a lot of Anthony’s explanations…

Kind regards

Peter

Meanwhile - after having watched a lot of videos - I got it.

Thanks, Christian!

EDIT: I just saw that you got it

Actually the exact explanation on how to load different sound/patches and assign them to a particular channel (independently from a Playback Template) is explained in video #4
So I suggest studying those videos: follow exactly what is told and shown.

In Cubase you make many manual settings to load a VST and assign it to the desired track. (Then normally you save a template if you reuse the same configuration, or you save a track preset if you want to reimport those settings in a new project, etc…) In Dorico you can do the same manual work to load the desired sound to the desired channel. But you can then create Playback Templates that assign automatically the patches to specific instrument, if you apply that Playback template to other projects. (All this is explained in the videos).

Here the explanation on how to assign manually a patch to a track:

To do the manual assigning, basically you need to first load a plugin in the VST and MIDI panel in Setup mode:

Then you switch to the Track Inspector panel, where you can choose which plugin will be assigned to each track, and set the desired midi channel, and the needed expression and percussion maps for that track:

If, for experimenting, you want to start fresh, without any assigned sound, you can apply the Silence playback template (from menu Play>Playback Template).
