Duplicate Layouts to Other Parts

I would like to create a layout for the Flute part and then transfer all layout information (including page margins, rastral size, etc. from that part to all other parts. I figured out how to Duplicate the Flute layout but then when I open the Oboe part I have to start all over again. I found “Propegate Part Formatting” which carried over some of the layout properties from that Flute part but did not seem to carry over Page Margins and some other information from the Flute Layout. Can this be done and, if so, how?
Thanks.

If you want all the layout options to be the same for all layouts, make sure that you have all the layouts selected in the right hand panel when you change the options. That way, all the layouts selected will have all the options you wanted changed, changed.

Toaster 1974,
I must be missing a step. I slected all the layouts in the Layouts Panel in Setup Mode but if I click on one to Propegate the Part Format only that one layout is now highlighted. Once I select the parts I want to duplicate, can you tell me how to actually do that. I know I am skipping something.
Thanks so much for the response.
Gary

It seems to duplicate things like rastral size and note spacing pretty well but seems to ignore slight changes I made in the page margins. I still think I am missing a step in the process.

There are two different approaches being discussed here.

@Toaster1974 's point is that if you go into the Layout Options dialog, you can select multiple layouts on the right – there’s even a button to select all part layouts – and then changes you make will be applied to all the selected layouts at once.

But it sounds like @ghfagan51 already has one layout looking the way he wants, and now he wants to propagate those changes to other layouts.

If you have the “Include layout options” box ticked, then I think the propagate operation should copy everything that’s in Layout Options. What are you noticing that’s different?

asherber,
You are correrct, Sir. Once I had the Flute part looking the way I wanted, my desire was to have that format copied to all the other parts. Several aspects of that Flute part don’t seem to then apply to the subsequent parts I open. Items such as page margins which will be slightly different from mu full score. I also and moving the instrument part name down below and to the left of the title directly across the page from the Composer. The default seems to place the part name at the top of the page above and to the left of the title. See screen shot. The first screen shot is the defualt layout for all parts and I am trying to get all parts to be laid out like screen shot 2 without having to move these item for each separate part.
Thanks, my friend.

asherber,
P.S. Include Layout Options and Include System Formatting were both checked but it still did not seem to propegate the Page margins or the layout of the frames at the top of the page.

The page margins in those two images look the same, to my eye.

Most importantly, though, if you have made layout changes directly to your Flute part in Engrave mode – like moving the text frame that holds the layout name – then you’ve got two things working against you: None of those changes will propagate to other layouts, and any changes you make to the underlying page template will not reflect in the current layout.

The usual principle in Dorico is to work from the general to the local. By default, all part layouts are based on the same page templates. If you want to move the location of the layout name in all layouts, you should edit the page template, and then that change will apply automatically to all part layouts.

If you look at your Flute layout in Engrave mode, there’s probably a red triangle on page 1, which indicates that there are page overrides. You can right click and remove page overrides, and then your Flute part will revert to the page template – and then you can edit the template to affect all layouts.

Note that there’s a difference between Layout Options – settings like page size, page margin, and space size – which can be applied to multiple layouts either in that dialog or through the Propagate Part Formatting dialog – and literal changes like moving/adding/deleting frames on a page. Literal changes should be applied through the page template, and then all layouts based on that template will reflect the changes.

asherber,
You are correct that the page margins were the same between these two parts. It seem from what you wrote that what I need to do is alter the page template for the parts and then not have to use any overrides in the first place. I will make an effort here to figure out how to change the page template.

Thank you as usual for your comprehensive response. I will need to read it over a few more times to get everything you said to sink in.

Yes, so as I understand this whole process:

Propagate part formatting only copies across system and frame breaks, essentially putting the same bars in the same place in each layout you propagate to.

Layout options (page size, rastral size, margins etc) are set able for each layout separately or for all together or every combination in between, depending on which ones you select.

Page templates are for setting the size, position and contents of all the frames on each of the pages they are set to.

As I always say, if I’m wrong, and I often am, someone will be along soon to put us right.

P

Toaster,
Good summary. I am working on it.
Thanks again.

Generally correct, but Propagate Page Formatting can also propagate changes to Layout Options from a source layout to destination layouts.

Yes, that’s the general goal.

Here’s the manual section about editing templates.

aherber,
Thanks again. I am going to be studying the manual piece you sent and try altering the page template.

Just checking here. Altering the page template will not alter my conductor score, correct? What I need is one ;ayout for the score and a different layout for all the parts. Will altering the page template accomplish this?

Dorico uses two different page template sets: one for score layouts and one for part layouts.

asherber,
I successfully changed the page template for both the default score and the default part as per the instructions in the manual. This allowed me to change the frame headings for both as separate templates.

Now, is this a process I only need to do once or will I need to set these again for each piece?

You can export your modified page template sets, and then import them into other projects.

Or you can save your current project as a project template, and then start new pieces from that template (which will include the page template modifications).

Excellent! I’m on it!

Thanks again.
