Dynamics lane not reflecting a change in dynamic

In the excerpt below, the hairpin at the end of bar two has playback suppressed on Pass 1:

I’d like to be able to control the amount of crescendo. Although there is a clear and audible change in dynamic from the opening mp to mf in bar three, this change is not reflected in the Dynamics lane of the Key Editor.

This audio example highlights the issue:

Ideally, I’d like to increase the dynamic intensity of the hairpin, but I’m unsure how to do this if the dynamic change is not appearing in the Dynamics lane. The right-click option (Dynamics → Increase Dynamic Intensity) has no discernible effect in this instance.

I wondered whether the issue might relate to the hairpin being attached to one of the two voices; however, as shown below, there is no dynamic change indicated from the opening to bar three in either voice.

It’s a very small issue, but I’m curious to know if it’s possible to achieve the playback effect I am seeking. As a point of information, the music is a vamp, though for the purposes of producing a backing track it has to have a predetermined number of repeats.

The dynamics look grey - which suggests you have suppressed playback.

Apologies, I missed a crucial piece of information.

The hairpin is suppressed on the first iteration of the repeat. In performance, the French horn material will sit in a Keys 2 part, with an instruction clarifying that the crescendo applies only when exiting the vamp.

In hindsight, I could have saved a great many words by asking a much simpler question: how can one adjust the dynamic intensity of a hairpin when it is suppressed on one or more passes within a repeat structure? In this situation, there appears to be no way to view the relevant dynamics in the Dynamics lane.

Curiously, the mf marking does not appear in the Dynamics lane, even though there is an audible change in level that reflects the marking in the part.

I’ll upload an extract from the flow tomorrow morning to illustrate the problem.

I hope this short excerpt illustrates the issue described earlier in the thread. I would be very grateful for any guidance on how it might be possible to adjust the dynamic intensity of a hairpin when it is suppressed on certain passes within a repeat structure.

good question. If you draw in a manual hairpin in the key editor, it is then active for both passes. I can’t see a way in which the key editor can differentiate between passes and would also be interested in knowing the solution if it exists (tbh in this sort of situation, I’d just write out the repeated bars in full but I guess that’s just me…)

I would write in multiple staffs. One of them only plays at pass 1, another staff only plays another pass. Hide all staffs except one.

I might well do this for the purposes of playback, but I’m trying to avoid introducing too many workarounds that would later need to be undone or adjusted when the final score is prepared.

At this stage, I’m not sure whether we’ll use a click track or additional keyboard parts alongside the live musicians, and the ability to make changes quickly is essential in the theatre, where time is quite literally money.

I imagine the dev team would like, in time, to add functionality that allows dynamic adjustments in repeated sections and offers more control over playback. That said, there are probably many other feature requests that understandably take priority over relatively small issues like this.

That’s another good idea - thank you for suggesting this.

I would try amending @sunnych 's suggestion by putting the “second time through” notes in a second voice. One can suppress it in the final version but “unsuppress” it to check its playback in the Key Editor.

What an excellent idea @Derek. I’m away from my desk at the moment, but I look forward to reviewing the file you very kindly uploaded in the morning. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to help with this issue.

Apologies for the delayed reply, @Derrek. Adding the notes in a separate voice, suppressing playback of the original notes in pass one, and enabling the notes in the new voice in pass two (with a higher dynamic/velocity set in the Key Editor) works perfectly, especially when the new voice notes are hidden in Engrave mode. Many thanks once again for this suggestion - much appreciated.
