I have been having issues with Dorico’s handling of dynamics when condensing.

In this example, There are three trumpets that I want to share a single staff, but only tpts 2 and 3 are playing and those two have identical dynamics, (which I know are identical because they are grouped) but tpt 3 is tacet. When I condense all three to a single staff, all on the up-stem voice, Dorico hides the dynamics because they are not identical for all three players. I don’t want to have tpt 1 take voice one and boot tpts 2 & 3 down to voice two because then Dorico shows bar rests for tpt 1 that I don’t want and cannot remove. I don’t want to add the dynamics to the empty tpt 1 bar, because that prevents me from utilizing a multi-measure rest in the tpt 1 part.
Is there a work-around that allows me to display all three trumpets on the same staff, with the dynamics but without having to split the voices?
Thanks for any help,
Tyler
Hi Tyler,
Would you be able to attach some form of a project with this problem? Will (likely) be quick to solve and explain - not to mention, we can upload a project for you.
Hi Daniel,
Here’s a flow of the page in question.
Sun Splendor - Flow 2.dorico (3.4 MB)
Hi @sexst764,
previous attempts... (click to enlarge)
in your condensing change you forced the three trumpets to share a voice. Since trumpet 1 doesn’t play (and has no dynamics) the amalgamation of the dynamics is impossible.
If you set a Reset, the dynamics will reappear nicely amalgamated:
Edit: I see that you don’t want the rests for trumpet 1. I search further…
Here another possible way to do the condensing change (the dynamic appears but the 2.3. doesn’t show up because it is already specified in the staff label). Trumpet 1 staff doesnt appear because I activated hide empty staves in Layout Options:
@sexst764
Here the solution: you need to activate Hide rests for inactive players (maintaining the Reset for the manual condensing):
