I don’t appear the be able to add dynamics to grace notes, They move to the principal note. What can one do about this? I see no musical reason why grace notes can’t have dynamic expression.
Perhaps you mean that you cannot add dynamics to both a grace note and the main one it is attached to? In a new project I can add a dynamic to a grace note just fine, but then, when I input a new one on the main note, the grace note’s one disappears.
What you could try is to:
- input the dynamic for the grace note
- input the dynamic for the main note by pressing Option/Alt so that it is voice-specific.
This worked for me.
Why does Steinberg think this is correct @dspreadbury ?
I can’t.
The popover closes but the attachment line is still linked to the normal note.
@Andro, I’m not sure if you are aware but you can change the beat-relative position of the dynamics via the Properties panel i.e. make it before the beat so it appears under the grace note.
Except that I have a run of five notes as graces, so the beat-relative solution does not work in this case.
i can fudge it in engrave mode.
I can’t either, at least not directly. What does work for me is adding a dynamic to the main note and move it to the grace note with Alt+Ctrl+Left arrow. Then add a dynamic to the main note with Alt+Enter like @MicheleGalvagno describes.
However, when you also need a hairpin on the grace notes, there is another long standing issue that makes this more challenging. I also hope this area will get addressed in the not-too-distant future.
That’s really good to know, thank you!
I believe there is a bug here in the current Dorico version if you are adding an immediate dynamic on its own. We should be able to address this in a forthcoming update.
Thanks for that @Richard_Lanyon! If you don’t mind me asking, could you be a bit more specific about what you consider “a bug in the current version”? The reason I ask is, adding immediate dynamics on grace notes the way Charles shows in post #10 has, to my knowledge, always worked like this since at least Dorico 5.1.x (I made the switch 2 years ago). And then there is also the invisible hairpin issue as shown by Charles in post #8. Are these one and the same bug?
In recent releases of v6 we’ve made some attempts to fix long-standing issues with the creation of dynamics. The problem with immediate dynamics was intended to be fixed as part of that but slipped through the net (if I remember correctly it does work for gradual dynamics in 6.2.30).
The problem with invisible hairpins - that they can sometimes be too short to draw - is unrelated.
