I often find that dynamics can be quite tedious to enter and I’m wondering if there are ways to do this that I’m missing. (sorry, I can’t capture my keystrokes in this video)
When I try to enter hairpins in note input mode, I can’t control the start and end points. When I try to adjust them, it moves all items in the group. Thus, I end up entering dynamics on adjacent empty staves and copying, but this creates its own issues. Because Dorico considers a tied series as a single entity, one cannot select only a portion of the tie chain to add the hairpin; yet untying for the purpose of adding hairpins is equally tedious.
Perhaps the way Dorico allows dynamics input could use some refinement?
No, you can enter dynamics (and almost any object) at any rhythmic position you like by using the caret. Most would agree that this is the best way to do it.
Right, I understand. However, If I enter a hairpin at the specific rhythmic position using the caret, then hit the space bar to extend it, it extends FAR beyond the point at which I want it to end. WAY WAY too far. The caret is great for an intensity marking, but apparently not for hairpins—unless there’s another way to control it.
I know the video is long and boring, but if you jump to about 0:50, you’ll see that I set the caret and enter “>” in the popover. I hit enter, and then press the space bar only once (of course there’s no way to tell that from the video). The resulting hairpin is nearly three measures long, but the grid is set to an eighth note.
@Christian_R Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. I misunderstood and thought that the hairpin duration adjustment with the spacebar was dependent upon the grid value, not the selected duration. My mistake. I’ll have to try working with this in mind and see if I can get used to it.
But I do think it would be ideal if the default placement would be to the end of the tied note, and THEN if I want to increase the span to add the selected duration. I can’t see a lot of situations in which one would want to input a hairpin by default that extends beyond the length of a selected note. Does that seem right?
