Are there any tricks unique to note entry in 6/8? I need to input a lot of dotted half notes (i.e. they occupy the whole measure) but also need the ability to sometimes and quickly switch to 8th notes. So I don’t want to change the whole grid (the note selector in the bottom left corner) to dotted half notes.
It’s easy in 4/4 because I could simply ask for a whole note (8 on the keypad) which would fill up the measure. If I use “8” when I’m in 6/8, I get an awkward note (dotted half tied to a quarter note), which then requires me to tediously extend or contract the duration of the just-created note – I’m constantly having to do this in 6/8.
Bottom line: in 6/8 it takes more keystrokes to do the equivalent things that you would do in 4/4. Any suggestions?
Not really, it’s the same repertoire of note values as in any other time signature. Your remark about having to change the grid, however, is confusing me, as you don’t need to be changing it much (if ever) during note input. You can make a note value dotted by either typing a period after the value (i.e. dotted half = 7. or quickly double-tapping the note value key.
If you mean for navigation, there’s a key command called Advance Caret which I have set to Num0, which skips the caret forward by the selected note value. So after double-tapping 7, that button skips ahead by a full measure of 6/8 at a time. Also in there are commands for Move Caret Left/Right by Bar, even fewer keystrokes if you configure it right.
