I have a very strange behavior in Dorico Pro 6 with the Opus player of East West. The user interface does not respond when I click in it. Well, my first click is always accepted/done but after that it seems that the GUI is not working anymore or has lost the position of my mouse. Has anyone seen this before ?
I already reinstalled the player software but same result. I also use VSL Synchron player and I have no issues with that.
If I launch the Opus player as standalone (so outside Dorico) then everything is fine. Only problem in responding when loaded in Dorico…
I assume this is not a real Dorico problem, but I wondered if anyone has seen this before and has a solution for me. This is very annoying because you can’t really select and load new instruments… Already asked Google too but not yet found anything helpfull…
Thanks in advance for your help.
Greetings from Belgium,
I’m sure there is no hidden box… II have done some extra tests too.
When loading the player for the first time (so in the play section of dorico), then everything is working fine. I can click everywhere and the player is always responding. However, after some time the window is not responding anymore to my clicks.
Sometimes I can hear the short preview sound of a preset, even if I clicked elsewhere. It’s like the position of my mouse is not correct anymore.
I’m using Windows, laptop with extra 24 inch screen. Using this setup for some years now and never had this problem.
I know I received an update of the player some time ago. Not sure if this problem started then as I don’t use Opus player in each dorico project…
Okay, if you are on Win, then please get the free utility Process Explorer, it’s like Task Manager on steroids.
When you get into that situation, run Process Explorer and in the list of processes look for the VSTAudioEngine process. Highlight that one and do a right click. From the pop-up menu choose Create > Create Dump > Create Mini Dump. Create two dumps in a row, save them, zip them up and post here.
Thank you very much.
And please ask if you have any question.
I did another check in the meantime. I opened a new Dorico project with only a few staffs and only 2 VST instruments (one VSL and one with Opus player). I put 3 instruments in the Opus player and linked them to a staff. This setup gives no problem at all. The opus player is still responding to my mouse. But I must say that I did this test by using only my laptop screen (so detached my external screen). So not sure if it’s related with the use of my external screen or is it related to the fact that I have limited VST instruments loaded ? In my other project (where I noticed the problem) I have 42 VST slots in use (I think 39 slots for VSL and 3 Opus players).
Anyway, I will redo my test with limited VST slots later today when I can use my external screen again.
I will also do the mini dump then…
I did some extra tests… I think it’s not related with my screen… In fact, when I open my Dorico project, everything is working well. I can open my 3 VST Opus player instances and do everything like normal (so mous is working). However, once I start the playback of my project, after that the Opus player screens are not responding anymore to my mouse clicks… They open, but I can’t click anymore.
I have redone this test several times and each time once playback was activated, the Opus player(s) have this problem…
I have a minidump of my Dorico after this happens but I can’t upload it here because it’s to big (seems to be limited to 4 MB here, it’s actually 105 MB).
the dump file is so big because you created a full dump and not a mini dump. The Windows Task Manager can only create full dumps, but ProcessExplorer can do both, full and mini dump.
So please make sure that you create a mini dump. Thanks
No, I created a minidump via the SysInternals tool (I’m an IT Systems administrator, so I know this tool). I right clicked on the VSTAudioEngine6.exe process and then “create dump –> create minidump”…
The 105MB file is the result…
Just did my test again : all well until I start playback for the first time. After that, Opus player has problems with the mouse clicks…
Ah, okay, I see, the audio engine is taking up 12 GByte of RAM, probably because of the over 40 instances of VSL, and similarly also the mini dump becomes big.
What if you zip up the mini dump, does it boil down dramatically? If still not under 10 MByte, could you share the file via DropBox, WeTransfer or similar service with me?
But it’s dificult to say what the problem is. At least the main thread of the auido engine is running and not stuck.
Then there are tons of threads from VSL and Opus, but I can not have a proper look inside, because I don’t have debug symbols from them, which in this case is essential.
Could you please get in touch with Native Instrumetns about this and send them the mini dump as well? They have the Opus code and debug symbols, so hopefully they can find out something.
Thanks for having a look at the dump file. I suppose you mean East West Sounds and not Native Instruments ? As far as I know the Opus player is made by East West and not a NI soft ?
Anyway, I will open a case on East West Sounds website. I will post the solution here once it’s solved so you (and everybody) can follow it too (in case someone else should have the problem in the future too).

First of all : EastWest support asked me to disable the OpenGL acceleration option in their Opus player. This did not change anything…
I opened another project where I used only 5 VST instances with Opus player (so 5 Opus players filled with some instruments). No problem at all with this file, even after starting playback in Dorico. I have the same Dorico file but I replaced my instruments with VSL instruments and 3 Opus players. Here I have the problem too (so GUI of Opus player is working well until you hit playback in Dorico).
I asked to EastWest if they could provide my the previous version of their player to test (as I assumed it could be version related) but it’s clear that their latest player is working well. It’s only when I use both VSL synchron player and Opus player… Or maybe the number of used VST slots in Dorico that causes this behavior ?
I put a screenshot of my Opus player here. The strange thing is when I click on the keyboard below I hear the sound of the instrument. When I click on the other instrument on the left, you don’t see it becomes highlighted, but he actually selected it because you can hear the other sound then when clicking on the keys of the keyboard.
So, it is working, only the GUI is not responding or refreshing when clicking…
I’m afraid EastWest will conclude that their player is working well. And I think so too…
