Edit playing technique dialog offsets question

I’m creating some playing techniques (for visual use only for now) for handbell symbols. I’m confused about the offset x & y positions when designing them with glyphs. When I’m only using one glyph, what do the x/y offsets do? No matter the positions I set, when I enter the technique into my music, it is positioned in the same place. I can’t find any explanation about the offsets.

The x and y offsets affect the position of the second and subsequent glyphs relative to the immediately preceding glyph. As you have seen, the offsets have no effect on the first glyph. If you want the x-offset to affect the position of the first glyph you see, start by entering a space character (U+20) followed by the glyph(s) you want.

Thanks @johnkprice. I sort of figured that must be the situation. I was trying to help a Finale user and he couldn’t figure it out and I’d never thought about it. Now we know.
