Editing instrument sounds

I’m a new user from Finale. I have begun to up-load a few Finale files transferred to XML. No problem at all with the transfers, but when I play these songs in Dorico, the instrumental sounds are not at all as good as the Garriton sounds I use in Finale. I write for my brass group, consisting of 2 trumpets and 3 trombones. How do I tweek the brass sounds to be better?

Welcome to the forum.

You can use the ARIA Player with Dorico, so there’s no reason why you can’t use the Garritan samples, if you really prefer them.

There are templates for GPO5 and for JABB (though the JABB one needs some work IMO…) If you’re just using the GIFF samples, then it’s fairly quick to set up, as they’re quite basic.

I had this sense when I first switched from Finale to Dorico (some years ago). Consider Note Performer as an option in addition to porting Garritan sounds where helpful.

Thanks so much for your reply. I’ve been trying to feel my way through the program, and did stumble on Aria yesterday. I even put Garrison instruments on one of my pieces and it sounded so much better…However, I’ve been trying all evening to find the Aria Player again and I can’t find it! Very frustrating. I’m kind of embarrassed to ask, but how, and where, do I find the Aria Player again??

You can add ARIA VSTs in Play mode’s VST and MIDI panel; then apply them to instruments in the Track Inspector. (Ideally, you can use a Playback Template to automate the process.)
