Editing is very slow

Hello!
I have composed 20 minutes of music in Dorico (string quartet) and I use
NotePerformer. The editing and inputing notes has become very slow.
For example, when I repeat a note with “R”, it takes 2 seconds to complete and that is with every process i do.

I have Windows 10
64 gb RAM
2,8 ghz 6 core CPU

What should i do?

That’s unusual for a small score. Presumably you don’t have Condensing on?

Is the notation particularly complex?

Without seeing the score, it’s hard to say more. You can email it to Daniel, if you don’t want to post it here.

Should i send the project file?
To what email address?

You can message it to me (by clicking on my name). I’m not Dorico staff, but I’m not as busy!

Or email to d (dot) spreadbury (at) steinberg (dot) de , with a link to this post, as well as the document.

Or maybe it is the way it should be?
For example when i paste a phrase it takes 1 second to past and
the undo and redo is also very slow (it has always been in my case as well)

For example, when you undo in cubase it is very fast.

No. As said, that’s not expected for such a small score.

Mayve I need to change some settings?
I think my computer specs should be ok right?

20 minutes of music isn’t all that small. I tend to start noticing latency after 100 or so measures of an orchestral score but then I’m on a 2019 MBP.

As I’ve said, you need to supply the document to someone else. Either post here, or send me a private message; or email it to one of the Dorico team.

It could be that the score is fine on another computer: in which case it’s a problem with something unique to your system.

It could be that there’s some combination of settings; or a particular use of notation that’s causing the slowness.

But nobody can tell you without seeing the document.

Hi @darkneutron,

a couple of ideas:

  • what happens if you reload Dorico (quit, wait 10 seconds, relaunch)? Same slowness?
  • Or if you restart the PC, same slowness?
  • Also is suggested: deactivate condensing until the editing is complete (not your case probably)
  • don’t work with multiple tabs open (close all tabs and relaunch Dorico to free the “memory”, I believe…)
  • work on one flow at a time when inputting music (deactivate temporarily all other flows for your working layout, or create a new working layout with only that one flow)
  • I noticed an improvement (with really large projects) after executing Lock Layout (in Engrave mode) and work then in Galley view (the calculations in background that Dorico needs to do are fewer), and when you are finished inputting all the music, you can then Reset the layout.

I will try them out.Thanks!
Actually it has been quite slow since Dorico 3, but I though it should be like this.
Here is one video, where I type “R” and undo

Thank you for the video, @darkneutron
Definitely not normal behaviour! Dorico is much snappier than that.
Normally such action should be quite instantaneous (if you don’t have a really large project).

It would be very interesting, though, if you could share the Dorico Project (you can use the transformation tools to change completely all the pitches at once, if you are worried about copyright etc…), to see how that Project behaves on a different system. It could help in finding the culprit of your issue.

It would no doubt help the Dev Team to see your Diagnostics. Perhaps they can spot something.
