Hi,
I have a problem with changing Played Durations for notes. The Played Durations tool in the Play toolbox is selected and I should be able to drag the start/end a note to the right/left to a new location. Dragging works fine, but as soon as I release the mouse button it jumps back to the original position. It’s like I am not allowed to edit the played duration. However, the Playback offsets in Properties are updated by the dragging. Am I missing something or is this a bug?
Have you tried using the ALT/OPT key and the arrows to shorten or lengthen the values in combination with your rhythmic grid settings? I think that’s what I ended up having to do.
Are you using Dorico 3.5 or Dorico 4, Gustaf? Does this happen to all notes, in all projects, or just to some specific ones? Can you upload a small example that demonstrates the problem, perhaps with a short screen recording that shows exactly what you’re doing?
I suspect that this problem is occurring because you have the Silence playback template applied. Go to Play>Playback Template and apply the HSSE template for your edition of Dorico. Does this solve the problem?
Shift+Option and left/right arrows shorten/lengthen the note, not just the playback. This works but also works fine with the mouse, That’s not the problem, it’s to use the playing duration tool.

Hi @dspreadbury,
I use Dorico Pro 4.2. It happens for all notes and if I create a new project it’s the same issue. Here is a short screen recording:
Hi @johnkprice,
Yes, it seem to depend of the Playback Template. I am not using Silence but a new one where I only have assigned one track to an endpoint yet.
If I assign all tracks to endpoint the playing duration feature start to work! Thanks!
@dspreadbury
Here I would wish this to be clear in both the application (disable the played duration tool if the playback template isn’t complete) and in the Dorico Help(That this feature assumes that the playback template is complete).
Yes, I agree that Dorico ought to make this situation clearer. We’ll look at how to improve this in future.
I’m using Dorico Pro Version. I can’t adjust the playback pitch length. I don’t seem to have anything that says HSSE- HSO. How do I get this?
Sorry, @JMT53, I’m not sure exactly what you’re trying to do. What do you mean by “playback pitch length”? Are you trying to change the pitch of the note, or its length, or something else?
I want to change the play lenghth of a few notes. I just want to adjust them a bit for phrasing, etc. From reading other post, It appears that I need something called HSSE+HSO template. that file appears on one of my other installs, but not the main loptop that I currently use.

Do you mean this? : Changing the played duration of notes.
This is a function of the key editor, that is not directly correlated to Playback templates.
If you are referring to Playback templates (that have no direct connection with Played Durations), if you installed all what appears in the Steinberg Download Assistant (choosing on the left panel Dorico and selecting Dorico Pro 5), your Playback Templates dialogue (from menu Play/Playback Templates…) should have following (factory) entries:
I can get to this screen. However, I see nothing that includes the letters "“HSSE”. I was told that it is a Playback template. Well, not on my list. My list looks like the one you sent. I’m trying to smooth out playback. Some of the spaces between notes are just too big for me. I want them to play the way they were notatedI I want to adjust them, but when I do, things just bounce back to the way it was.
I tried to re-install Dorico, but it did not fix the problem. I seem to be stuck.
@JMT53 , that quote above is from Nov 2023. Looks like “HSSE” is an old name, so if you have HALion Sonic Selection you should be good to go as far as having the library installed. And as @Christian_R says, that is a separate issue from changing the Played Duration of notes. You should be able to adjust them in the Key Editor:
If you are finding that when you adjust the position or duration of notes in the piano roll of the Key Editor, they seem to snap back to their previous position, that normally indicates that those notes are not currently going to be played back.
I suggest you start by reapplying one of the factory playback templates, which you can do via Play > Playback Template.
Thanks! All is well!
I have the same problem. I have repeated quarter-notes played by Halion / GM Reed Organ and I want to make them longer, ie. reduce the gaps between them, The Key Editor won’t let me, they jump back to the original length when edited. Reapplying a factory Playback tempate does not help. I noticed that applying staccato or tenuto to the notes doesn’t change their duration, either. But that’s fine, i just want to edit the MIDI notes iand Dorico won’t let me.
In Library > Playback Options, on the Timing page, check the options for separating repeated notes. By default, Dorico detaches successive notes of the same pitch on keyboard instruments to simulate lifting and re-depressing the keys.
