Efficient justification approach

Apologies for this novice question. Although I’ve read many posts over the years about layouts, justification, and pagination, I’m only just starting to explore the various options and trying to understand how they work together.

My understanding is that making global changes is generally the preferred approach, as it avoids introducing too many local overrides.

In a song I’ve recently finished, there is a single line where the lyrics overlap, even though the system is only filled to 95.3%. I’d like to avoid making changes that might create other layout problems elsewhere, so I’m wondering what the most efficient way would be to ensure that lyrics do not overlap.

I should add that the printed page from Dorico (using Notation Central’s Scoring Express for Musical Theatre and Studio template) looks terrific overall.

If one line is too crowded – add a System Break.

If one page is too full – add a Frame Break.

These sorts of interventions are perfectly fine. The “local overrides” that can be** problematic are things like manual changes to the page by adjusting the text and music frames.

** I say “can be”, because if you’re prepared for these changed to affect particular pages, then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t use them, but there is a risk of working against Dorico’s automatic work.

Many thanks for this, @benwiggy, much appreciated. Adding a system break worked perfectly.

I hope asking a follow-up question isn’t pushing my luck…

Again, I’m trying to understand how the default options work, this time with regard to pagination.

With the default settings, the song is spread over four pages. The first page is filled to the bottom, but the following pages are not. I’m wondering why Dorico doesn’t simply fill each page in turn. As it stands, it looks a little odd to have such large gaps partway through the piece:

Page 1

Page 2

Page 3

Page 4

The Layout Options contain Threshold percentages for Vertical Justification, so that the page (frame) is only justified when the frame fullness reaches the threshold.

The values are here (Layout Options > Vertical Spacing > Vertical Justification)

… and the explanation for how they work is here:

The default is set to 80%, so that’s what’s happening in your pages.

Profuse thanks once again for your help, @Benwiggy. I really appreciate you taking the time to point me to the relevant options.
