I’m searching for efficient ways of entering drum slash-with-stems notation. (Windows 11; Dorico 5.1.70.2200)
How can I “transpose” or transform percussion notes into the slash voice. using Alt+arrows, I can move notes up & down the staff, but it skips over the slash voices.
Is there no way to enter the slashed note via MIDI when using the MIDI GM mapping (and not staff position)? Feels like an unnecessary and arbitrary limitation.
An example scenario that I think is common: You want the drums to copy the same rhythm as what the trumpets play, but with slashes-with-stems.
My intuition told me to do Paste Special → Paste Into Voice → Slashes-with-stems. But this menu doesn’t exist for percussion staves. Either this is a bug or a very unfortunate missing feature that would solve this entire issue in an intuitive way.
I must be missing something, right? Advice welcome!
Thank you Daniel; indeed at 21:27 (https://youtu.be/RbM-xkppoMo?t=1287) it’s shown that CTRL+arrows allows moving a note into the slash voice. This works, but leads to new questions about efficiency.
Most melodies won’t be just 1 note value like the video. Let’s take an example. Here’s a bass melody I’d like to bring into the drums as slashes-with-stems:
The mess is understandable as a technical side-effect, so I use a workaround. Fortunately there’s a 1-line shaker staff just below that will unify all note values.
I can then copy & paste this into the drum part, then CTRL+arrow my way into slashes with stems:
Oof; again understandable for technical reasons. But I then must clean this mess up.
So back to the reason for my post: Efficiency. Is there a more efficient way of doing this than:
Make sure an empty 1-line percussion staff is available
Copy the music to the empty 1-line percussion staff
Copy that then to the drum staff
CTRL+arrow until you find stems-with-slashes
Manually select & clean up rests in the voices you had to traverse along the way
?
Also I am still missing a way to enter into the slash voice with my MIDI keyboard (w/o using staff position mapping which is not easy to switch to/from); apologies for the piggyback question but I again just feel like I’m missing something obvious.
Sorry to bump this, but I’m still really searching for answers here (and maybe the answer is “yes, this is the most efficient way”) but I feel like I’m missing something to make this common situation less painful. thank you
Hi @tenfour, I made a little video to show an alternate way to copy your music rhythms from any other staff into the slash voice with a little fast trick (“extracting” temporarily your slashes instrument and reading it after the copy and paste).
I hope it can be somehow helpful:
