Eighth Note Beaming issue

Hi all, I would like my eights to look like this:
THIS
and NOT THIS:
NOT THIS

I know there is a setting in Notation Options, here’s my setting:

So why isn’t Dorico doing what I have selected in Notation Options?

A. Are you in 4/4 or 2/2? If 2/2, that Notation Option won’t have any effect, for better or worse - as it says at the top of your screenshot, that option applies to quarter note denominator time signatures.
B. Is your music imported MusicXML, and if so, did you turn off the beam grouping option in Preferences > MusicXML Import before importing? In this predicament your best bet is to Select All and go Edit > Beaming > Reset Beaming.

Ahhhh. Thanks pianoleo, yes It is an XML import… and it’s in cut time.

In that case, you might find this workaround helpful: A workaround for persuading Dorico 3.5 to beam/group 2/2 like 4/4

I’ll definitely try that! Thanks

It’s also best practice on all XML imports to always select all and then reset appearance and reset position, so that Dorico will use its own algorithms rather than trying to honor whatever weirdness might be in the XML file.
