Electric Bass note sounds different than written

Weird issue. I’m sure I’m missing something easy.

Writing out a part for Electric Bass and have notated an Ab, but it sounds as a Db. G, A and all the other notes for Electric Bass sound like they should. I tried changing VSTs (from note performer to modo bass) and the error persists. What am I missing?

What VST are you using for the sounds?

Welcome to the forum, Jack. Could you attach the project itself here, so we can take a look? Feel free to cut the project down to just a single player and a few affected bars.

So far I’ve tried both note performer and Modo Bass 2. Both have the same issue

Here’s the file.

It all looks correct here and sounds correct when played back.

Thanks for checking.

I rendered out an audio file just to check my own sanity:

Also, when I reopened Dorico just now I got an error notification which I sent to Steinberg. (VSTAudioEngine5-2024-08-26-221346.ips)

That’s really peculiar, and I’m afraid I can offer no explanation. Your project plays back as expected for me too. You don’t have a wonky pitch bend wheel on a keyboard attached to your computer, or something like that?

I’ve tried it with two different computers, two different midi controllers, several VSTs, latest Dorico. I tried changing that part to different variations of bass instruments, and it persists on all of them. And it’s just the Ab in that octave. An octave up, it’s okay. Baffling.

Why on earth am I not hearing it, then? I’m really sorry that I don’t have an answer for you here.

I have exactly the same issue! Electric bass, just the low Ab, plays as Db. All other notes are fine. If I cut and paste the part to double bass, it plays fine.

Is this happening using Noteperformer? Because it’s a known issue for some electric bass and harp notes being incorrectly mapped… See this thread:

Yes it’s Note Performer!

Thanks so much! I can stop rebooting Dorico then!
