Empty bars without whole rests

I would like to share my experiences about bars that are missing whole bar rests for some reason. I am Finnish so I apologize if my English is a little bit complicated…

I am making a transcription of my former symphonic orchestra work for a symphonic wind band. First advice: I forgot to make the first document for only the score, only then duplicating it for processing my parts. Luckily I had already printed the score, though, so no problem. But after adding the cues for different players (and cleaning disturbing rests away from some) the document is now very different. I might have somewhere a V.S. for quick page turn etc. and of course they are now scattered around the score.

For the transcription I opened new wind and brass parts, more clarinets and so on. First warning: my parts are without key signature. Using courtesy signs with brackets for chromatics in a violin, when you copy paste that for a clarinet a b natural in barckets is of course correct in the violin, but it copies to c sharp in brackets to the clarinet, but it should of course be without them. So some cleaning to do.

I filtered all cues away, they have to be done differently for the wind score I’m now writing. After that here and there I have bars without whole bar rests. First medicine: Shift-B and add rests, but it doesn’t always work. Second way: Check the place where the written music starts again and press in properties Ends voice if activated. Sometimes the Start voice is also a possibility.

Third way is already clumsier, but if nothing else works, I copy paste rests from another place and put them over the emptiness. Then, when I found that even that didn’t work, I wrote an extra note to the bar preceding the empty bars and lengthened it over the barline–and simsalabim, all the necessary rests appeared and stayed there, though I took the extra note away.

My guess is that all these cues being cleaned away is a big reason for the rests not to show.

I feel that lots of this could be done in an easier manner, so please share your ways. I’d be thankful, I still have 30 minutes of music to transcribe. But I am definitely going to make another document for the parts in the future…:wink:

I am using the latest version of DoricoPro 6 and I am very happy with it.

How have you added cues? Have you done this manually, or used Dorico’s cue feature which automatically shows the correct notes (even if you later change the source material), using small noteheads, and showing bar rests in the destination part? With the ability to hide cues in the score?

If not, that is probably the main source of your hidden rests issue: if you use the dedicated cues feature, that won’t be a problem in future.

Usually it should be possible to have a single Dorico project that can contain scores and parts. What differences did you require that meant you had to have two separate projects?

For layout-specific markings like this, you could use text frames in the part, instead of text items inside the music (although text frames can’t go beyond the page margins). It’s also possible to hide text items in the score without hiding them in the part, though.

I try to answer according to my understanding. I am in no trouble, all my work since 2018 when I started with Dorico 2 has been succesful, the musicians have been happy and I have felt better than with Finale and Coda music starting with that bunch in 1993.

My history is an earlier pencil writers + playing the trombone in the Sibelius Academy orchestra before studying to be a conductor. My main jobs are now at the age of 73 conducting, composing and teaching young conductors. The transition to writing music with a Mac over 30 years ago was first full of troubles but the development of the notation programs was fast. It helped me very much having written by hand previously as I had already the knowledge about what kind of parts to give to my players to avoid extra problems in the rehearsals.

To answer your questions, for the cues I use Dorico’s cue feature and hide them in the conductors score. I have met with some problems if I have needed to hide the “real” rests from the cues as then in some cases the rests didn’t show in the score. Well, then I got some advice to use these “starts + ends voice” things.

The texts I probably added to the parts–after already printing my score–in such a manner that they also then appeared in the score (which I didn’t need anymore). And now, starting the huge transcription work where I move stuff in the new project based on a copy of the symphonic piece I of course cannot use cues from the strings because I will eventually delete them altogether from this new work.

I then decided to filter and clear all old cues and the frame + system breaks because they wouldn’t work in the new document. Then I had a lot of empty bars all around the document–these I have tried to make visible again with all the ways I described.

I keep learning all the time about Dorico and I really love the possibility to attend this forum and get good advice when in need. Thank you for doing this for us!
