A query about Encercle Sans font. I don’t know where to ask about this, but I thought it would do no harm here as it is principally used in music engraving.
How do you (and can you) change the text font it uses?

I would have thought that the numbers and letters are a part of the font itself.
Perhaps. But not necessarily. I find the numeric font quite ugly, even though the utiltity is great.
The point is that the numerals and the enclosures are the (glyphs of the) font. It’s not like you’re choosing a choosable text font in, say, Dorico then adding an enclosure as a separate element.
F.N. — I suspect the font’s developer wouldn’t be open to a redesign, as I asked him a few years back about the addition of pentagonal enclosures and he replied that unfortunately it has very few users, so he can’t justify spending more time on it (understandably).
@judddanby Thanks. Now you have me thinking I should make a font that does the same, and release it. I don’t care if only ten people would buy it.
I love Encercle Sans! Not the particular look of the alphanumeric glyphs, mind you, which I agree with you leave something to be desired. But functionally I use it constantly, even outside of Dorico in text documents, in my compositional sketching and music analyses. That includes the ability to color-fill the enclosures. It’s become truly invaluable to me.
Any equivalent font that improved upon it would have me as a paying customer!
