Engine 2 from Best Service isn't working

Hello,

I work with Cubase 15 pro under Imac Tahoe 26.4. I want to use my engine 2 from best service but the plugin manager can’t find in the plug-in. In the library/audio/vst directory I can find the vst plug-in in vst, common and vest3. But evenso I can’t add a new track with engine 2. Only the new version engine player is working, but then only with two libraries, not all the ones I got.

I there someone knowing a sollution?

Hi,

Are you on a Mac Intel or the M- processor? If you are on the M- processor, is the plug-in compatible? If not, try to start Cubase in the Rosetta 2 mode.

Can you see the plug-in in the Block list? What does it say there?

Thanks Martin.

I will try. But I don’t know what the rosetta mode from cubase is.
But I will see tomorrow.

Hi,

This is not on the Cubase side; this is on the macOS side. Right-click on theapplication in the Applications folder > Get Info. Enable the Open using Rosetta option. This will start the application in an emulation of the Intel processor, so you can run all the Intel-only compatible software (in Cubase, it means you will be able to see Intel-only plug-ins).

Engine 2 is a VST2-only Intel-only plugin. Enabling Rosetta in combination with enabling VST2 support in Cubase ought to make things work for now but is not a good long term solution.

In some cases you might have to upgrade your library to the newest version to use it in Engine Player (for instance only Celtic Era 2 has been ported to Engine Player and not the original Celtic Era). Even then, not all libraries have been ported yet to Engine Player, but the number of libraries not yet available is dwindling.

Which Engine 2 libraries do you have? I might be able to clarify which ones are available for Engine Player in some form and which ones are not.

This is a list of libraries I own.

Thanks for the list. Some of those are Kontakt and are not impacted by this.

Accordions 2 was ported - if you upgrade your Accordions to Accordions 2, you will get the Engine Player version. Accordions 1 however was a Kontakt library to my knowledge and not an Engine 2 library unless I’m mistaken in that, so if this is the Kontakt version then you shouldn’t need to do anything with this right away since it will mostly depend on the Kontakt version you have.

The Chris Hein stuff should not be Engine, I believe that’s all Kontakt.

Cinematique Instruments Library is Kontakt

Engine Artists Library is a free “demo” library of a bunch of other libraries, they haven’t ported that yet, but since it is a demo ideally you shouldn’t be having to rely on it for music-making.

Epic World has been ported to Engine Player, so Epic World should be working in the new Engine Player for you.

Ethno World 5 (EW5) is Kontakt and so that is unaffected, simply having a compatible Kontakt version should do the trick.

Forest Kingdom 3 has been ported to Engine Player, not the earlier versions. It looks like you have the original Forest Kingdom. You’ll have to upgrade to Forest Kingdom 3 to get this in Engine Player.

Gu Zheng has been ported to Engine Player, so that should be working for you already.

Poetic Guitar 2 I am unfamiliar with completely. I’m not sure if it was for Engine 2 or not. Unfortunately it looks like it was discontinued years ago, which explains why I am unfamiliar with it. If it was for Engine 2 it probably means it won’t be ported.

TITAN - this has not been ported yet and I’m not sure if it will be, simply because it relies a lot on features of Engine 2 that Engine Player might not have.

World Percussion Library - this is the Evolution Series which moved to Kontakt years ago. I would suggest contacting Evolution Series (https://www.evolutionseries.com/) to find out of there is some kind of crossgrade or upgrade discount for the Kontakt version as an owner of the old Engine 2 version.

Usually I would suggest organizing by sampler instead of putting all the Best Service stuff together - it can get confusing if you are mixing Kontakt and Engine 2 and Engine Player libraries all in the same folder.

To summarize my previous post: with three exceptions, everything you are using is already compatible with your newer system or can be upgraded or crossgraded to a version that is compatible.

Those three exceptions, where you might be stuck, are:

  • Engine Artists Library - a demo library of various Engine 2 libraries, don’t know if this will be ported
  • Poetic Guitar 2 - I don’t know if this was for Engine 2 at all but it was discontinued years ago so very little chance of this being ported
  • TITAN - synth library for Engine 2, don’t know if this will be ported because it might need a ton of features to be added to Engine Player and they might decide it is not doable or not worth it

These libraries may need a paid crossgrade or upgrade to get them on VST3 versions:

  • Accordions - if you are using an Engine 2 version you might have to pay to upgrade this to Accordions 2 to get the Engine Player version. If this is the old Kontakt version you shouldn’t need to as you can simply load this library in a newer Kontakt that supports VST3 and Apple Silicon.
  • Forest Kingdom - you would have to pay to upgrade this to Forest Kingdom 3 which puts this on Engine Player and then it will work with VST3 out of the box. This is available now.
  • World Percussion Library - this has been moved to Kontakt, hopefully if you contact Evolution Series they will offer you a crossgrade to the Kontakt version, I imagine probably there is a charge.

The cheapest time to upgrade Accordions (if needed) and Forest Kingdom (definitely needed) is the Best Service “Step Up Promotion” they have every year in the summer (July/August). Keep an eye out for this sale as it is usually the only time that upgrades go on sale.

Thanks
I will look in to it
