In layout-vertical spacing setting the vertical distance, including justification does not change the page. For a while, the change changed page 2 but no change 1.
If youâre talking about the vertical justification settings, note that your page needs to be at least as full as the first number in those settings in order for justification to be applied. So if you have that set at the default 60%, but your page is only 55% full, no justification will take place; you would have to lower that threshold to something like 50%.
Before posting, I lowered the threshold to 10%. When things didnât change it was time to ask. In all cases, Page 2 did change.
Can you upload your project here, so someone can take a look? Otherwise, weâre just guessing at whatâs going on.
Attached. Project was started by importing a MusicXML file (also attached).
It is a single part (score and part should be identical). I was finally able to get the score to where I wanted it. The part cannot be changed. Ignoring templet and other direct commands (vertical spacing, etc).
Operations on the score were inconsistent. Sometimes working, sometimes not.
I am sure the issues are caused by what I did/didnât do, but I canât figure out what.

In your part layout, youâve got the flow heading showing, which takes up some vertical space and makes everything a little more cramped. But your score layout has a text frame for the copyright, which squeezes those systems a little. If I turn off the flow headings and remove the copyright frame, the vertical spacing of the two layouts looks almost identical. (The part layout still has an indent on the first system, and its text frame for the title is slightly taller.)
Iâm not sure what changes youâre making, or what your desired outcome is. I think the biggest issue is that youâre using a space size which is too big for this page and this music; you might get better results if you use rastral size 4 instead of 3.
If youâre having trouble with specific adjustments, can you describe what youâre trying to do?
The MusicXML imported into two pages.
I was trying to get it to one page for printing.
It looked like the heading/footer was preventing me from doing that. I tried to use the template to do that by removing the extra text top and bottom and enlarging the music frame.
I first tried to work with the part. While having a little success, I ended up not knowing which template it was using. After several attempts to figure out how to force Dorico to use the parts template I gave up and went to the score.
Finally I got it close enough to do what I wanted. Although, vertical spacing, in general, did not work. I had expected it to âflowâ the music to the next page if page 1 got too big. It didnât change page one, but did change page two without moving anything
YouTube videos showed what âI needed to doâ, but when I did it, nothing happened.
The documentation (including Copilot and ChatGPT) were no help. The AI kept giving me instructions that did NOT match what I was seeing (buttons, settings, whatever) This was no surprise). The documentation wasnât helpful as I didnât know where to look and there were no index entries to help.
After spending all to much time with it, I came here.
The result I wanted seemed very simple, but I couldnât get there.
By default, Dorico uses the Default Full Score template for score layouts, and the Default Part template for part layouts. You can change this either in Layout Options or in the Page Template panel in Engrave mode.
It depends what you mean by âtoo bigâ. In your part, for example, you have set many of the vertical gaps to 0, which means that Dorico wonât put any space between systems. If you reset these to factory settings, then Dorico will reflow things onto two pages.
If you want to get this all on one page, one way is to make the following changes:
- Layout Options > Page Setup > Space Size = Rastral 4
- Layout Options > Vertical Spacing > Minimum Gaps > Inter-system gap = 9
Unrelated to the issue, but there is a little misprint: Bar 16 5th note is C flat, not C double flat
Hand set part ⌠generally a couple of errors ⌠thatâs why we use Dorico! ![]()
