Erratic playback of sustain pedal markings

Sustain pedal markings behave erratically in 6.1., just as they did in earlier versions.

I’m using Pianoteq as the VST. Even after I delete all automation and add pedal markings after that, Dorico won’t play them, or all of them.

Can you supply a document that shows the problem?

I’ll do that. Dorico also puts the sustain pedal on where there’s no pedal marking. This makes demos of piano music hard to make. I’ve had this problem in previous versions and was hoping it would be gone in 6.1.

Don’t know if this is related.

If the problem doesn’t occur when using other pianos, such as Etude Elements, then that would point the finger at Pianoteq.

It occurs with Etude, too. Removing all automation does not help. Only deleting every pedal marking helps. It seems that the only way to write pedal markings so that they play back as written is to save them last. But this is not ideal when sketching piano music.

OK, well, as said, you’ll need to supply a document that exhibits the problem, not only for other users to offer help, but for the development team to see if anything needs improving.

I don’t want to post it here. Which email address should I use to send it to the team?

Send it to: d (dot) spreadbury (at) steinberg (dot) de

with an explanation of the problem.

Include a link to this thread.

Or if you can supply a document here with “random” notes that you don’t mind being public, that will get more eyes.

pedal test.dorico (1.5 MB)

Here’s a short test project with random notes. Bars 4 and 5 are supposed to be without sustain but the pedal gets lifted on the third beat of bar 4. If the pedal line is shortened so that it ends on the last sixteenth-note of bar 3, the sustain will end too early, already on the second sixteenth of the third beat in bar 3.

Happens here too.

The issue is due to the “unwinding” of the pedal lines relative to repeats. It’s definitely a good idea to avoid having pedal lines crossing repeat barlines, which is not the case in the example in this thread, but even when the pedal lines are contained within repeated sections, there are clearly still some scenarios in which this can go wrong. I will take a look at this as soon as I’m able.

Thanks. Yes, I do use pedal lines crossing repeat markings, and I suppose I do this so often that it is the cause of my frequent pedal problems - which remain after editing. I hope this can be improved in future versions.

Unwanted pedals in the playback continue to appear even in subsequent flows that have no pedal markings at all, not even deleted ones. I had to split my project and export individual flows because the random pedaling - that doesn’t go away even if I discard pedal markings in the other flows that have them, or show up in the key editor - makes playback useless. Please look into this, it’s clearly buggy.
