EVENT/PART NAME PREFERENCES: Give options per event track type, orientation, visibility, size, etc

Imo, it doesn’t make sense that in preferences ‘Show Event Names’ is tied to all events - including Arranger Track. Obviously someone might want to see the arranger track names, but not have everything else.

It should be broken down

-Arranger Track Events
-Folder Track Events
-Audio Event
-Audio Parts
-MIDI/Sampler/DrumTrack Parts
-Video

The top level key command ‘Show Event Names’ should remain as an All On/Off toggle which remembers the customized state of the sub-preferences, and then new individual key commands should be added for the new sub-preference options.

Furthermore,

Someone should be able to decide for each applicable event type, whether file-name or description is shown- or both. I guess this would maybe only be applicable to audio events.

edit There Should be On/Off Key Commands for both File Name and Description

I think file name and description should somehow be differentiated - perhaps description is italicized.

Thanks

The problem of Event Names obscuring data can be resolved? - Cubase - Steinberg Forums

Fairly peculiar Steinberg has not improved this UI/UX issue.

I think users should in preferences, also be able to change the align orientation of event names - left, center, right. Typically, the beginning of an event is the most important part to be able to see visually - musically and technically. To have it obscured is a problem.

There should be different UI/UX preferences for different logical behaviours to meet a variety of users different needs.

  • Event Name

    • Text Size,
    • Font,
    • Bold, Italic
  • Event Name Level

    • Event Name Behind Data
    • Event Name On Top of Data
  • Event Name Align - Left | Center | Right

  • Event Name Visibility Logic

    • Event Name Disappears When Mouse Over Event
    • Event Name Appears When Mouse Over Event
  • Event Name Activation Zoom Level (Name appears/disappears depending on zoom level)

  • Event Name Full Dedicated Tab (Full Event Name Tab, no overlay over Data, does make event data area smaller - negates other above options when activated, thus users can have a key command for this toggle, to go between seeing event names clearly or auto-hide/adjust preferences )

    • Tab Size customization
  • Event Name Truncation

But yeah, just to emphasize - THE START OF AN EVENT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF IT, It can’t be obscured - but I also depend on event names.

Nice ideas !

I’m not sure about the : Event Name Align - Left | Center | Right
I think most people want it left, maybe center (? not me) but never right :S
I would rather have a tick box “adaptive” where depending on the zoom, name is always displayed on of left of the visible part of the event on the screen.

I just cannot stand it when the name obscures waveform/transients at the start of an event, or the start of a midi passage.

I don’t really need to see the name of an event when I’m zoomed in, so having the name aligned right or center wouldn’t bother me. But some of my other solutions are probably better.

This feature request is pretty solid imho. I especially like the idea of using mouse over events to show/hide the part name.

Personally I don’t often name parts/event. I find it takes too long in relation to the benefits. But I do however like to see the event property icons on my parts/events and unfortunately showing those is tied to showing names in the preferences.

But doesn’t that already exist? If you move the mouse over a part, you get a tool tip with the name? Or was the intention that the name should show up in the part/event itself, even if “Show event names” is disabled? Is that better than a tool tip?

Else, I am like you, I rarely bother to name parts (and tbh, I have a lot of UI/UX beef with Cubase but never a problem with how events names are displayed  ).

My personal beef with how this all works is that I have to have Show Event Names enabled in preference or else I won’t see the event property icons (grouped, shared copy, locked, etc.). In my opinion these should be separate options in preferences. However, I would happily settle for having event names and possibly also the icons, hide when the mouse is over the event.

I actually didn’t know that (because I always have Show Event Names on as it doesn’t bother me), but I agree, that is really stupid…
