Export audio mixdown path location defaults to user/music folder

Since Cubase 14.0.20 I have a problem where Cubase doesn’t remember the path of the project folder. Whenever I click the folder path (which defaults to /mixdown) it open “C:\user\music” instead of “D:\Steinberg\Cubase Projects\Untitled”. The previous update didn’t have that problem. When you click the folder path it opens the Windows style folder navigation.

I’ve read in the forum that people had the same issue in older versions of Cubase but there’s no fix listed.

If it didn’t default to the mixdown folder I wouldn’t mind but I find the mixdown folder to be annoying and can’t get used to it.

I use Windows 11 24H2

Yeah this is still broken in 14.0.30 :frowning:

Hi,

Sorry, I have no Windows system.

What happens if you store the project on the C drive, but in another location than the default one (for example, Documents)?

I don’t have this issue on Windows. Neither with 14.0.20 nor with 14.0.30.

Do you get an error message every time you start Cubase?

I have the same issue. Please solve it - it’s frustrating. The workaround I found is manually choosing the export path, but I don’t see myself doing it manually for every project.

This problem still persists in Cubase Pro 15.0.5 (Win11 25H2) and it’s unbelieveably frustrating. I’m not sure if it’s a Windows thing or what.

In Export AudioMixdown dialog, the export path is set to the correct project’s folder (set via Use Project Mixdown Folder or Use Project Audio Folder). However clicking the path field opens Windows’ MUSIC system folder!

Once a different folder is selected via Choose Folder drop down menu, clicking the path filed jumps to this newly selected folder (as expected)

But then if I change the path again to project’s Mixdown or Audio folder via drop down, the path is shown correctly (Mixdown or Audio) but clicking the path field navigates to the newly selected folder (and not to the project’s Mixdown or Audio folder).

I can’t figure out what’s the problem.

EDIT:

I got rid of the system’s MUSIC folder and now clicking the path field navigates to “This PC”.

Are there any preferences that might be causing this unwanted behaviour? Navigating to the project’s Mixdown folder was a great improvement. Now it doesn’t work for me?

Please, could anyone on Windows 11 confirm it’s working correctly?

Yeah I still have the same issue. I’ve just accepted it, it’s terrible :frowning:

Have you tried temporarily renaming the preference folders of your latest Cubase versions (two versions down)?

Nope deleted the whole preference folder and it still behaves the same.

You got to delete or rename the preference folders up to two versions down. Otherwise, Cubase will migrate faulty preferences from previous versions.

Aaah sorry I didn’t read your comment right! You mean these folders in \AppData\Roaming\Steinberg right? All my settings and templates are back to default so that must be the preference folder I think.

I’ve renamed them all and it still defaults to the Music folder of Windows instead of the project folder.

Hi,

It’s better to rename the folders like:

  • _Cubase 13_64
  • _Cubase 14_64
  • _Cubase 15_64

What I do is: _{{current_date}}_Cubase 14_64, like this:

  • _2026_01_17_Cubase 13_64
