Exported audio is not the same as played back from score

TTBB choral work. When I export audio with all unwanted parts muted the exported audio still plays back all the parts in the score. I even deleted all unwanted parts in setup and still the full score parts are present in the audio export file. Everything sounds correct when playing back from the score. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jim

Is it possible that you exported the audio once with all instruments, and now you’re exporting to a different location but still playing back the original file?

Don’t think so. Exported many times in different locations.

IIRC the issue may be your playback program (eg. Media player) cache-ing the original file. Give your export a different filename and see if that makes a difference.

Yes, Janus remembers correctly, but it only holds true if you are on Mac.

I’ve never witnessed that on a Mac. If I overwrite an audio file with a new version, the new version will play correctly in QuickLook and QuickTime Player, and most other apps.

Make absolutely sure that the location of the export is correct; and check the date-stamp on the file, to see that it’s been modified right now.

Otherwise, you’ll need to upload the file, to see if people can reproduce it.

Hi @benwiggy ,
I did experience this myself, and actually the updated time stamp does not prevent this from happening. The problem is not on Dorico side but on iTunes (or what’s it called today) side. iTunes loads the audio file the first time and keeps it in its cache, then Dorico updates the file and sets a new time stamp, but iTunes just ignores it and continues playing out from the cache.
So exporting to a different file name is just a workaround for a problem in iTunes or the underlying caching mechanism of the operating system. Dorico is doing everything correctly (unless you prove me wrong  )

Ah: OK, that makes sense. I only use iTunes (aka “Music”) for music I want to keep in my Library. I don’t have it as the default for audio files. I wouldn’t use it for ‘working’ files.

You are right. The problem was indeed iTunes/ Music. Had to delete files from the iTunes library each time a new part was extracted or the previous one would play. What is your application preference for working audio files?

Thanks.

VLC is the Swiss Army knife of media players.

QuickTime Player is the OS-bundled app. You should be able to “Quick Look” the audio in the Finder, as well.
