I have several friends who made the switch to Dorico from Finale and Sibelius. These are people, who make a sizable portion of their income from writing for high school percussion drumlines and percussion ensembles.
I am working with one friend pretty regularly in the last few months (three to 4 times a week on video calls going over how to set things up, why things don’t work, etc.). He is wanting to use Virtual Drumline for his writing. He is about 75% there. He is asked to provide audio files for the client groups. This leads to a lot of issues when it comes to getting instruments to playback appropriately.
I am building percussion maps and sending them to him, however one issue that is sometimes coming up is the lack of playback techniques that exist on his end and the lack of percussion techniques with the instruments on his end.
It would be great if I could export the instrument that I “edited” (added percussion techniques) to send to him, along with exporting the playback techniques that are setup to use with that instrument. That way I can send all 3 items needed to make the percussion playback work somewhat seamlessly (percussion instrument with techniques, playback techniques, and percussion maps). Using playback templates doesn’t seem to work, as I cannot get playback templates to retain percussion kits.

Would sending a sample Dorico file to your friend and having your friend make your various settings defaults help out?
While I think this would be an ok work around. The only issue I see with this, is that I would have to have a file with 50+ instruments, and a method of digging through each instrument making it the “default” option. Or 50+ files, having to do the same thing.
In my mind, I export the instrument with a name perhaps something lame like “Robby Bongos”, I have a playback technique file called “Robby Bongos PB”, and my percussion map “Robby Bongos PM”. The from each menu, instrument: import “Robby Bongos”, Playback Techniques: import “Robby Bongos PB”, percussion map: (already does this) import “Robby Bongos PM”. And everything just works (provided the end user selects the correct playback device).
Let me stew on your idea a little bit. It might be an acceptable work around for now.

You can pull in what you want/need from another Dorico project through the library manager.
I will test your idea this evening. This might be a good way to do it.

So close… I was able to bring in the playback techniques and the percussion maps, however I am unable to import the percussion playing techniques that were added to the percussion instruments.
I need to have these techniques export with the instrument, so the end user can just “import” either the percussion techniques, or the entire instrument with the pre-saved techniques.
