Expression Maps in Cubase 15 not sending output after external trigger

Thanks for this bug report. How can it be that such a basic issue which should show in any proper test cycle gets into a official release costing CHF 99.- to update from Cubase 14.

I have been using Dorico to get all proper articulations using their poperly functioning expression maps and then export midi which will include the key switches to Cubase. If you then use the same libraries, in fact the same Vienna Ensemble Pro file, you do not need any expression maps in Cubase ( and maybe no update to version 15 )

Hi,

What is the use case? How does it happen, that you okay the Key Switch note, please?

Saw the 15.0.6 update today, but this issue has not been resolved

Hi,

You are right. The fix for this issue is scheduled for the 1st maintenance update. Cubase 15.0.6 is a hotfix.

do you have an ETA for this?

Hi,

I’m sorry, I’m not allowed to share this information.

Same problem here and it breaks my orchestral template completely. The non then reassign does seem to work as a hacky workaround. Commenting to get an update on the solution.

I’m going slightly mad about this… I have created my Abbey Road Two expression map, it used to work for two hours this morning until it stopped working. And I don’t know why it stopped working. And nothing I do makes it work in a way that makes sense to me… Anyone having problems with expression maps in Cubase pro 15 and VE Pro 8 out there?

[Edit] I just went back to Cubase after writing here, and the instruments now follow the map… except the violin 1. This makes no sense.

So is this issue fixed or not? I’m waiting on it before trying Cubase 15.

Yes, it is supposed to be fixed by the latest update.

Ok, I didn’t know it was a real issue needing a fix. I won’t waste any more time on this until they release a fix then.

15.0.10 should contain this fix. If it doesn’t, please clarify how it fails for you, if you can reproduce the problem.

Well, I think I already have 15.0.10

I wouldn’t know how to reproduce the problem. I could send the file to someone? I simply reproduced Eleanor Rigby, wanted to test it on Cubase with Abbey Road Two on VE Pro, it worked until it stopped working. And worked again, but not for violin 1. The expression map is the same for all four instruments… I don’t see why it could sometimes work, and sometimes not. Let me know if there is some address I can send this to, in order to help solving the eventual bugs…

This issue is still present for me on Cubase 15.0.10 (Windows 10).

Here is a concise description of my repro steps:

  1. I have a track with a handful of articulations (sound slots). Each sound slot triggers a different articulation in the instrument via keyswitch.
  2. In a MIDI region, I have some notes with an articulations switch part way through.
  3. If I play back the region, it works as expected: I can see the sound slot change in the track’s expression map panel.
  4. If the playhead is stopped, and I change the soundslot via remote key, and then press play, the region again plays back fine.
  5. However, if I manually change the soundslot via remote key after pressing play, all subsequent sound-slot changes that are written in the Articulations lane are ignored (and the track’s expression panel does not show any changes), even as the playhead reads an articulation change).

I have tried the following configurations, all of which fail reliably in step 5 above:

  • Remote trigger mode: Keyswitch
Remote trigger source: track’s single MIDI input
  • Remote trigger mode: Keyswitch
Remote trigger source: different MIDI input (track input = ā€˜All MIDI’)
  • Remote trigger mode: Program change
Remote trigger source: track’s single MIDI input
  • Remote trigger mode: Program change
Remote trigger source: different MIDI input (track input = ā€˜All MIDI’)

Hi,

Would you mind sharing the project (just a snippet with a short MIDI Part that we can replicate the issue with), please?

You can share it in the Private Message to me or to @StefanFuhrmann

Ok. For the record (and sorry, I did not see you answered me) I reopened the project five minutes ago and everything is working again! I’m stumped, I have no idea why it has stopped working.

Hi,

If it happens again, feel free to share the experience, please.

Hi, I have a similar experience with the 15.0.10 update so far. In principle it works, but randomly the articulation changes are not performed. Due to the occasional occurrence I don’t know how to reproduce the issue.

Latest thing I tried, when the problem occurred, was to let the midi event to start earlier, since I noticed, that the notes in question were at the very beginning of the midi event. It worked again afterwards, but this may have been by chance, since the articulations came back the other times too from alone.

Best regards Kai

I noticed that too, but moving all the midi events two bars later have not solved the problem when it was happening.

Note that I am using VE Pro 8 which is very recent, I wonder whether it could be a problem between Cubase and VE Pro?

Hi,

I can replicate the issue, now. Reported to Steinberg. Thank you!
