Extending the range of the alto trombone in Dorico 5 Pro

I’m using dorico pro5 and trying to input the 4th movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. He has notes for the alto trombone that go all the way up to D5, but Dorico won’t sound anything above A4 (concert pitch). I’ve tried editing the instrument’s range in the in the instrument’s definition, but it has no effect on what I hear. There doesn’t seem to be any way to change from standard to extended range. Is there any other place that I can edit it’s range? Thanks, Cliff K

It’s not Dorico, it’s whatever sound library you’re using… if it doesn’t have the notes in the sound library, there’s nothing you can do (except find another sound library that has those notes on that instrument).

If your sound library doesn’t provide the high pitches (they were not recorded as samples), I’m afraid there’s not much you can do, except trying a different library. I can’t try it myself right now, but maybe NotePerformer, that doesn’t rely on recordings, but synthesises the notes, can produce them?

The HALion Symphony Orchestra Trombone Combi instrument goes up to a D4 (octave above Middle C). But yes, Iconica Sketch is much lower.

Noteperformer’s instruments usually cover the entire keyboard range, ‘far beyond realism’.

It might be possible to edit HALion instruments with the full ‘Pro’ version of HALion, but not with the standard ‘Sonic’ player.

This was why I like(d) the ARIA Player and Garritan libraries, because you can edit the instrument definitions to extend the range, and do other things.

Thanks for the reply. I didn’t realize that you could mix libraries in the same piece. I plugged in Garitan for that instrument and it has more than enough range. Thanks for responding…..Cliff K

You’ll need to make sure that you have an Expression Map for whichever Garritan instrument you used, e.g. GIFF (Garritan Instruments for Finale), GPO5, etc.

I’m using the Iconica Sketch Ex map and the dynamics seem to be working. Is it necessary to have one specific to the Garritan library? If so are there any available somewhere -or at least instructions on how to create one? I’m using GPO 5. Thanks for responding…Cliff k

Dynamics will be the same, but other characteristics will not be.
