hellow!
Just bought a Hydrasynth Explorer and set it up as a MIDI Device and it works like a breeeze.
I’m now trying to record the Hydra on an audio track but can’t get any sound from it
It’s connected to the 3/4 of my RME Babyface FS Pro and faders in the interface are moving.
Then I created all the inputs in N13 but sound doesn’t come thru.
See anything I might be missing?
I used to use external instruments a lot.
What happens is, you associate specific audio inputs with a specific midi input, packaged as an instrument track. This instrument then behaves like a plugin - for example imagine a piano sound loaded up. This runs “live” all the time and if you change a midi note, it responds.
To make this become audio you would “print” this by using the render function. The same applies to an external instrument which must run “live” all the time (responding to your midi recording) until you render it. You could then “release” it and instantiate another external instrument track using the same hardware. With a VST instrument however, there is no limit to the number of instances right? Whereas a real instrument can only exist in one time and place at a time.
Thanks a bunch goodbyenine
What confused me was the fact that the fact I could load it up in an instrument track which is the same we use for regular VST.
In fact it’s not the case: same type of track but inhabited by 2 different things.
Since you used them a lot:
what’s the most efficient way to say, make a full song using only 1 external instrument?
This is what I’d do based on my possibly limited knowledge:
create an instrument track with Hydrasynth in it
create an audio track with audio coming from the Hydra instrument track
record a MIDI part with whatever CC automations
print it to the audio track
Then I’d
preserve the MIDI track and move it far to the right
After inquiring friends about their use of external instruments in other DAWs, I’ll just “treat” them as simple audio sources using audio tracks. (like it would be a guitar or bass or whatever)
Tried the same workflow and it just works.
Obvs not as flexible as using a VST + MIDI.
What I previously found confusing is that, since they can send MIDI like any VST instrument, I thought they could be instantiated multiple times like VSTs if I wanted to use MIDI but that’s not the case. Also because all the YT tut videos I’ve watched never mention this “limitation” which might be obvious for more experienced users but not for noobs like me for what concerned the use of external instruments in a DAW.
Thanks again goodbyenine for sharing your knowledge and help
indeed makes sense.
What was confusing is that you could load it up in an Instrument Track and expect to be able to add multiple of those with the same external instrument. and whichever was selected would get its input activated.
